Portugal beat hosts France to clinch their first EURO Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo wept with sadness and joy as substitute Eder's extra-time goal saw Portugal beat hosts France 1-0 in Euro 2016 final to win their first major tournament.

Ronaldo was stretchered off in the first half after being injured by Dimitri Payet, but returned to the touchline to see Eder's long range strike settle the game at Stade de France.

"It was not the final I wanted, but I am very happy," Ronaldo said. "It is a trophy for all the Portuguese, for all immigrants, all the people who believed in us, so I am very happy and very proud."

Portugal centre-back Pepe, voted the man of the match, said: "We said we would win it for him and we managed to do that."

In the history-making triumph, it was substitute forward Eder, who rarely scores for the national team, took a pass from Joao Moutinho in the 109th minute, cut onto his right, and unleashed the perfect strike towards the near-corner. France keeper and captain Hugo Lloris made a stretch but still failed to touch the ball.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off injured in tears just 25 minutes into Sunday’s Euro 2016 final against France in Paris.

Portugal beat a French side who found new inspiration from Griezmann -- the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals who was willed on by a nation longing to rediscover the feel-good factor.

The tough duel witnessed six yellow cards for Portugal and four for the hosts. This is the fourth meeting between Portugal and France in a major tournament. France have won the previous three, all in semifinals — Euro 1984, Euro 2000 and the 2006 World Cup. Portugal put in a defensive master class to deny the French the trophy on home soil. Fernando Santos’ side, who have developed a flair for the dramatics, win their third match of the tournament in extra-time, after playing out to a sixth draw in seven games at Euro 2016.
