TRUMP-N-MODI
No qualms about ethics or respect for democracy
28.09.19 - VIPIN PUBBY*
No qualms about ethics or respect for democracy

United States President Donald Trump and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi are both great showmen and share several traits which have resulted in a wonderful chemistry between the two as both have no qualms about ethics or respect for democracy and can be brutal against those who come their way.

The mega event organised in Houston ‘Howdy Modi’ was even a greater success than the earlier ones in the Madison Square and the Silicon Valley where Modi had impressed the Indian community abroad during his first term. The latest event was made all the more grand due to the presence of Trump which also also perhaps unprecedented in that country’s history.

It was obvious that the two were sharing a platform less for the crowd present and more for their voters and constituencies back home.

Modi does it all the time, whether speaking in Parliament or addressing the nation from the Red Fort to conveying his "Mann ki baat” but  stakes are even higher right now for President Trump who would be facing elections for a second term in about a year. Trump was evidently counting on the sizeable Indian community in the US for support. The community, which appears to be in complete awe of Modi, is again likely to back Trump in the hope that Modi would be able to convince the US president to go slow on his anti-migrants stance.

-----------
-----------
Besides being great showmen, the two leaders are also known to be outspoken as well as ready to break conventions and norms. Also the two leaders can go to any extent to attack their critics and political opponents. Trump has on several occasions criticised former presidents and has blamed them for the current situation.

Recently during his joint press conference with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan he specifically named his predecessor Obama for his policies towards that country. Modi too has been blaming India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for several ills plaguing the country now and had ‘dynasty’ as his favourite charge against the Congress.

Another trait they have in common is muzzling of any criticism, indulging in vendetta and getting ruthless while dealing with political rivals. Both have a particular hate for the media. Trump has been running a campaign against what he calls "fake media” and belittling media persons in public. Modi has carried on with his resolve not to address any press conference or answer any question from media. Even at the recent joint press conference alongside Trump, Modi refrained from taking any questions from the media.

Modi has proved his mettle by securing a massive victory in the general elections earlier this year and has an unhindered four years for pushing his policies and programmes. For Trump testing times have begun and he would be willing to go to any extent to get a second term.
-----------
Trump and Modi have broken several barriers and have junked several international conventions.
-----------
His political rivals, the Democrats, too are up in arms against him. In the latest move, the House of Representatives which is dominated by Democrats has decided to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump, charging him with betraying his oath of office and the nation’s security by seeking to enlist a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain. The charge is that he ordered holding of aid to Ukraine to force it to hold an inquiry into financial dealings of his political rival and former Vice President Joe Biden.

It is unlikely that he would be finally impeached as the procedure is quite complex and Republicans enjoy a majority in the Congress but the proceedings may have an adverse impact on his election prospects. No wonder he has reacted sharply to the move.

He would bank on his flamboyance and his unflinching resolve to look after the interests of Americans to seek a second term. He has been placing great emphasis on economy and trade to benefit America. He talked about trade both with India and Pakistan and has been at loggerheads with China mainly due to trade imbalance between the two countries. This is where India fits in his scheme of things.

Trump and Modi have broken several barriers and have junked several international conventions. It is difficult to imagine what’s in store if Trump also wins a second term. With the two at the helm of power in the world’s oldest and the world’s largest democracies, one can only pray for blossoming of true democracy. That’s a tall order but that’s all one can do.

NRIs in USA
Why they behave like German zombies and dummkopfs during Hitler's time?
28.09.19 - Justice Markandey Katju
Why they behave like German zombies and dummkopfs during Hitler's time?

I have visited America often, and I am presently in America too. I often interact with NRIs here. Some are US citizens, some green card holders, and some H1B visa holders.

These NRIs are very competent in their technical jobs, and in fact they would not have got a US visa if they were not so. Probably they are better than local Americans, and work harder. Many are successful entrepreneurs.

However, very few of them have any political sense, and most of them are stupid oafs from that point of view. Most are hard core supporters of BJP and Modi, despite the fact that the Indian economy is sinking, manufacturing, real estate and power sectors are in steep decline, and unemployment has reached record heights. 300,000 workers have already been laid off in the auto sector, and some predictions are that soon this figure will reach a million. 200,000 jobs are said to have been lost in the IT sector.

Farmers suicides, which has crossed 300,000, is continuing unabated. Every second child in India is malnourished (as per Global Hunger Index and UNICEF reports). 50% Indian women are anaemic. Proper healthcare and good education are almost non existent for the masses.
-----------
-----------
BJP stands for Hindutva, but one can't eat Hindutva. One has to eat food, and to get food one must have a job. But jobs are getting less in India (since there is a manufacturing decline ), though 12 million youth are entering the job market every year. Many of these will end up as hawkers, criminals, beggars or suicides.

Then why are NRIs still supporting BJP when the country is going downhill. Let me explain.

Secularism is a feature of industrial society, it is not a feature of feudal or semi-feudal society. India is still semi-feudal, as is evident from the rampant casteism  and communalism still prevalent. Merely writing in the Constitution of India that India is a secular country does not make it secular. The Constitution is just a piece of paper, the ground realities are very different.
-----------
When Modi spoke of abolition of Article 370  the harebrained NRIs in Houston gave him a standing ovation for a great victory over the devil Pakistan.
-----------
In fact India is a highly communal country. Most Hindus are communal, as are most Muslims. This I know from personal knowledge. When I am with my Hindu relatives and friends, and they are sure no Muslim is present, they often spout venom on Muslims. If a Muslim is lynched by cow vigilantes, most Hindus are either indifferent, or some even happy that a 'terrorist' has been eliminated.

Now most NRIs in America are Hindus. Though they are settled in America, they have brought their baggage, their communal and casteist mindsets, from India to this country ( someone humorously remarked "Even if they go to Mars they will carry this shit with them "). A Brahmin remains a Brahmin, and a Dalit a Dalit, a Kamma of Andhra/Telengana remains a Kamma, and a Reddy a Reddy, even while living in USA (the Kammas have their organisation called TANA or Telugu Association of North America, and the Reddys have NATA or North America Telugu Association ). So even though the Indian economy is in a tailspin, our NRIs, most of whom are Hindus, will support the BJP, which claims to represent the Hindus. After all, building Ram Mandir and protecting cows is more important than providing food or employment to the masses.

One may be very good in computer science, and yet one may be a buffoon or blockhead politically. And that is what most NRIs in America are, as was proved by the Howdy Modi event in Houston recently, where the NRIs behaved like the German zombies and dummkopfs during Hitler's time. When Modi stated (in several languages) that everything is fine in India, though the contrary was true, not one of the 50,000 numskulls and dolts gathered there had the courage to stand up and say "Prime Minister, that is not true. You are talking like Goebbels saying that Germany was winning the war, when everyone knew it was losing".

The test of every political system and every political activity is one, and only one: does it raise the standard of living of the masses? Does it give them better lives? From that point of view, construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, protection of cows, and abolition of Article 370 were only gimmicks. But when Modi spoke of abolition of Article 370  the harebrained NRIs in Houston gave him a standing ovation for a great victory over the devil Pakistan.

Long live the American NRIs!

Ab Ki Baar: After Modi & Trump, Howdy Doody, Youdy?
23.09.19 - S Pal
Ab Ki Baar: After Modi & Trump, Howdy Doody, Youdy?

PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI was with US President Donald Trump in Houston, Texas. It was a Sunday. It was a very bad day for President Trump.

Trump said India never had and will never have a better friend in the White House.

Modi said Ab Ki Baar, Trump Sarkar

Trump is set to fight his second term election. Modi is forever in electioneering mode.

But as we said, it was a very bad day for Trump.

A whistle blower had revealed days earlier that Trump had pressured Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. in connection with the allegations of corruption he (Trump) had made earlier against Biden. Someone had heard the conversation, and now an official complaint had landed at the White House.

Joseph R. Biden Jr

Trump's White House was refusing to hand over the complaint to the Congress. The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee had also resisted attempts to force Trump’s White House to give Congress a copy of the complaint.

Sunday was a very bad day for Modi's friend.

On Sunday, before coming to Modi's Howdy jamboree, Trump was forced to admit that he did indeed do what was alleged in the complaint. This was a stunning admission and must have left the organisers of Modi event scared that Trump might not finally show up.

Trump did, but something else also showed up.

Nancy Pelosi

Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a warning to the White House: Turn over the secret whistle-blower complaint by Thursday, or face "serious escalation from Congress."

There was more bad news: The influential chairman of the House Intelligence Committee dropped his resistance. Many moderate freshman lawmakers earlier opposed to an impeachment inquiry said they planned to change course.

Modi was tightly clenching the hand of his friend whose other arm was being badly twisted by the Congress. Unlike the Congress that Modi deals with, this one carries real power.
-----------
The US President has a remarkable record of being respectful towards women, as underlined by Hollywood Access Tapes. He has stated on tape how he handles or wants to handle women, and what parts do his hands grab. Modi shook those hands for a long, long time.
-----------
Trump has confirmed he did speak to President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on phone, said it was all "entirely appropriate" but did not say that he did not talk about allegations against Biden. In fact, he has confirmed the substance of the conversation, as alleged by the whistle blower.

He did so just before leaving for a trip to Houston, Texas, where Modi was waiting for him.

Trump is roiling in scandal. If the latest scandal surrounding his conduct leads Pelosi or other top Democrats to bless full impeachment proceedings and a vote, Modi might prove to be a very bad omen.

Currently, the House Judiciary Committee is already investigating whether to recommend articles of impeachment against Trump over other matters.

Being seen with Trump, conceiving, organising, sharing an event at this grand scale was certainly a very brave decision of Narendra Modi, considering the kind of person Trump is. The US President has a remarkable record of being respectful towards women, as underlined by Hollywood Access Tapes. He has stated on tape how he handles or wants to handle women, and what parts do his hands grab. Modi shook those hands for a long, long time.

Trump is facing serious allegations of obstruction of justice, detailed by the special counsel investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. The only reason he is not facing impeachment is that it could end in an acquittal by the Republican-controlled Senate.

 Volodymyr Zelensky

Clearly, Trump's hold on the Republican Party is not as strong as Modi's on BJP.  Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has said the White House should disclose the contents of the phone call with Ukraine's Zelensky, and that "it would be good for the country if we could deal with it.” The New York Times on Sunday reported that Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, was even more critical, deeming it "critical for the facts to come out.”

"If the president asked or pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival, either directly or through his personal attorney, it would be troubling in the extreme,” he said.

Modi was busy gambling big — he did not wait for whether Trump will be facing impeachment soon or not. He declared: "Ab ki baar, Trump sarkar."

One can understand Ukraine's troubles. Ukraine has been fighting Russian-backed separatists, and the Trump administration is currently withholding a $250 million package of military funding. If Kiev tells the world what Trump wanted to do to Biden and his son, it will not get the money from Trump. If it does not, it may not get a penny if Joe Biden ever becomes the president. And Biden is a serious candidate and in the running for a Democratic Party nomination.

How does one understand India's stance? What, if tomorrow, Biden is in the Oval office?

One way out is that Modi can conceive and organise a "Howdy Biden" event on an even larger scale, and hug and embrace Biden even more, and hold his hand for even longer. Biden’s hands would be cleaner, of course.

Donald Trump is not exactly an intellectual powerhouse. He has never been seen with a book. He is not known for any kind of sophistication.

On Sunday morning, exactly when Modi was not letting go of Trump's hand and Trump was repeatedly putting his arm around Modi's shoulder, the US House Intelligence Committee chairman, Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, said that the accumulating evidence of wrongdoing, and of a presidential cover-up unfolding in real time, left the House with few other options.

Exactly when all Indian channels thought that the devotional songs and clone Bollywood style choreographed numbers were really the prime time television that this nation of 130 crore people needed very badly, Schiff was on CNN: "I have been very reluctant to go down the path of impeachment...but if the president is essentially withholding military aid at the same time he is trying to browbeat a foreign leader into doing something illicit, providing dirt on his opponent during a presidential campaign, then that (impeachment) may be the only remedy that is coequal to the evil that that conduct represents.”

The US lawmakers are clearly moving towards a direct discussion about and possibility of impeachment. If that happens, then, Ab Ki Baar, we will have egg on our face.

Pramila Jayapal

Modi was hailing Indian-origin Americans in America. That, one presumes, included Pramila Jayapal, the only India-origin Representative in the House. She represents Washington and is the co-chairwoman of the Progressive Caucus.

In an interview on Sunday, she said she was now ready to vote outright to impeach Mr. Trump, rather than simply continuing the investigation, and that she planned to make her case in public.

Modi was also making his case in public.

You are the public.

Ab Ki Baar, Howdy Doody, Youdy?

ANCIENT TRADE ROUTES
Can India lift these road blockades?
05.09.19 - Team PT
Can India lift these road blockades?

The damage that Pakistan has done to India by closing its ancient road roots to Central Asia and Middle East Asia has been immeasurable. By this one action, it has stopped India’s outreach to other parts of the world; and even to countries which are geographically quite close to it, like Afghanistan or Tajikistan.

The most damage has been done to India’s Punjab which was traditionally the gateway into India…through the Khyber… Radcliffe Line’s blockade at Wagah and Husainiwaala have closed the Punjab into a God-forsaken corner of India, a state that had once occupied central status as a hub of trade. But that is a lament for another day.

For now, let us ponder on how much we have lost – the Grand Trunk route could have been a gateway to Iran/Persia, a gateway to Istanbul and on to Europe. If trains had been allowed westwards from Attari, we could by now have had a train to Europe via Iran and Turkey. Amritsar to Tehran in Iran is 2800 kms by road, which is approximately the same distance from Amritsar to Rameshwaram…or Porbandar to Guwahati. The amount of distances we are used to travel in India, this would have been a cakewalk. Tehran to Istanbul is another 2800 kms…it is not a pipe-dream, it was quite the possibility if not for this road blackade by Pakistan.

How far do you think Amritsar is from Kabul? It is just 774 kms, lesser distance than Amritsar to Jaipur… and Pakistan with its intransigence has been this big wall between two ancient brotherly lands.

But Wagah-Attari is not the only option. India had a land-route out to Afghanistan, a route that had been used in ancient India by the Chinese travellers to learn Buddhism, and by the Huns to attack and plunder. That route was from the area we now know as Afghanistan (then known as Bactria) directly through Gilgit Baltistan into Kashmir valley and then yonder into rest of India.

That route from Gilgit was closed to India by Pakistan’s Kabaili raid on J&K in 1948 and its occupation of that territory.

This brings us to the larger question of the Silk Route and China’s CPEC. Do a random Google search of the term ‘Silk Route’. You will see that Silk Route was an ancient trade route to India, with some of its roads passing on to China, and others to Europe, Central Asia, Africa and Middle East Asia..you will see that the ‘hub’ of the silk route was India… not China. (You can google the definition of the engineering term – hub/fulcrum – too, to understand what I mean). Is it not then a big big surprise that India has allowed China to reclaim the Silk Routes of trade and to re-build them to its advantage. This one claim to the ancient trade routes shall be a game changer…

So, the Silk Route FROM India needs to open, if India is to reclaim its ancient place of world leadership (of course, while needing many other initiatives). If China seeks to spread its hegemony over revival of ancient routes, surely, we too have a right to do that…

So, India is left with two options. Either to wait for Pakistan to allow access through Attari-Wagah border; or to re-assert its rightfully legal control over the territories of Gilgit Baltistan. The second option seems a more workable solution, it is the route that India needs to open, if India is to access Central Asia and beyond… a road from Jammu, to Kashmir, Laddakh, Gilgit and beyond into Afghanistan.. Pakistan by blocking India’s access through Wagah-Attari has left India with no other choice, one reckons…

I am not a war monger; but I know enough of history to know that this route will need to open again, if not sooner than later… till then, India is locked in a pincer grip of a Pakistani road blockade… but maps change all the time.. this map of Line of Control is dynamic too… hope it changes soon to India’s advantage. As a nation, we have had enough of blockades.

Man granted protective bail in 'forced marriage' case

The Lahore High Court on Monday granted protective bail to Muhammad Hassaan, who contracted marriage with Sikh girl Jagjeet Kaur, in a case lodged by the girl’s family on charges of alleged abduction.

Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Mushtaq allowed the protective bail to Hassaan till Sept 7 with direction to approach the relevant court in Nankana Sahib district for the relief of pre-arrest bail.

The petitioner appeared before the court along with his counsel Nadeem Sarwar before the judge took up the petition, reported Dawn.

The counsel presented facts of the case before the court saying the case lodged by the girl’s family was false and only to avenge the lawful marriage Kaur contracted with the petitioner on her free will.

He said Kaur embraced Islam without any coercion and was given Muslim name Ayesha before nikah (marriage) of the couple was solemnised. He said the bride had already recorded her statement under 164 of Cr.P.C before a judicial magistrate concerned denying the charges of abduction and forced conversion to Islam.

The counsel said the police had been raiding the residence of the petitioner and harassing his family members at the behest of the girl’s family and the local Sikh community.

He asked the court to grant protective bail to the petitioner as he wanted to appear before the court concerned and join the police investigation.

The judge allowed the petition and extended the concession of protective bail to Hassaan till Sept 7.

Meanwhile, Ayesha (19) presently living in Darul Aman could not be presented before a special judicial magistrate due to security reasons.

Her appearance before the magistrate was due on Monday, however, the police did not produce her owing to security concerns. Now, she will be presented before the magistrate after Ashura.
