Brazil rejects G7 offer of 20 million dollar aid

Brazil on Monday rejected aid from G7 countries to fight wildfires in the Amazon, with a top official telling French President Emmanuel Macron to take care of "his home and his colonies."

"We appreciate (the offer), but maybe those resources are more relevant to reforest Europe," Onyx Lorenzoni, chief of staff to President Jair Bolsonaro, told the G1 news website.

Lorenzoni was referring to a $20 million pledge made at the G7 summit in France to fight the rainforest blaze.

"Macron cannot even avoid a foreseeable fire in a church that is a world heritage site. What does he intend to teach our country?" He continued, referring to the fire in April that devastated the Notre-Dame cathedral (Right pic).

The presidency later confirmed the comments to AFP.

Brazilian environment Minister Ricardo Salles had earlier told reporters they had welcomed the G7 funding to fight the fires that have swept across 950,000 hectares (2.3 million acres) and prompted the deployment of the army.

But after a meeting between Bolsonaro and his ministers, the Brazilian government changed course.

"Brazil is a democratic, free nation that never had colonialist and imperialist practices, as perhaps is the objective of the Frenchman Macron," Lorenzoni (in pic) said.

Tensions have risen between France and Brazil after Macron tweeted that the fires burning in the Amazon basin amounted to an international crisis and should be discussed as a top priority at the G7 summit.

Bolsonaro reacted by blasting Macron for having a "colonialist mentality."

Amarinder urges Pak not to back down from Kartarpur commitment; seeks resumption of trade ties

Amarinder urges Pak not to back down from Kartarpur commitment; seeks resumption of trade ties

Chandigarh, August 11: Expressing concern over reports of a `discernible slowdown’ in Pakistan’s activities for the Kartarpur Corridor development, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday urged the neighbouring country not to back out from their commitment on this vital project, which was of supreme religious importance to the Sikh community.

The Chief Minister’s statement came in the backdrop of reports that India was forced to send a reminder to Islamabad to hold meetings to finalise key Kartarpur decisions.

With the momentous 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji just three months away, any slowdown in the project would lead to its non-completion in time for the historic event, said the Chief Minister, adding that such a move would serve a big blow to the desires and aspirations of the Sikh community, who are hungry for ‘darshan’ of the ‘asthan’ of the place where their 1st Guru had spent many years of his early life.

On the issue of stoppage, by Pakistan, of trade at the Attari-Wagah border, in the wake of its decision to downgrade diplomatic and trade ties with India, Captain Amarinder said political concerns should not be allowed to be clouded by any decision that was detrimental to the interests of the people on both sides.

The stoppage would, in particular, inflict heavy avoidable economic losses for the poor in Pakistan, as the goods would now have to take the long sea route through Iran or Dubai, said the Chief Minister. The trade suspension would also lead to serious loss of jobs and livelihood for thousands of porters, truck/train drivers, staff etc, who are deployed as part of the trade Infrastructure on both sides, he added.

Captain Amarinder termed as `incomprehensible’ the stoppage of trade on the pretext of some action taken by India with respect to a purely internal matter, and urged Islamabad to revoke the trade suspension in the interest of the people on both sides of the border. India, he said, wanted peace, communal harmony and development on the Indo-Pak border, people on both sides of which had suffered immensely due to the continued violence and hostilities.

While reiterating that Kashmir was an internal matter of India, the Chief Minister said Pakistan should not link it with diplomatic or trade ties between the two nations.

The Chief Minister called upon the Indian government to also open diplomatic channels to press Pakistan to resume trade ties. He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a special economic package for the development of the border states of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to create better job opportunities for their youth. The Centre, he stressed, should also raise additional battalions in the Army, Para-military forces and the State Police for all the border states.

GLOBAL VOICES ABOUT PARADISE KASHMIR
World is talking about Kashmir. What’s it saying?

World is talking about Kashmir. What’s it saying?

PUNJAB TODAY brings you voices from some of the leading publications whose voice counts on the world stage. It is a measure of how the latest move of the Indian government led by Amit Shah and Narendra Modi is being seen internationally.

Here are some excerpts from the editorial comments in The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Economist. Editor.

The Guardian Editorial

Kashmir: Danger ahead
August 6, 2019

The ... decision to split the state in two...is shocking and perilous. Several legal experts believe it unconstitutional too. Its abrupt and ruthless manner, with the house arrest of well-known politicians, imposition of a curfew and blackout of the internet and phone lines, will likely lead to protests and inflame the resentment which has underpinned an insurgency which has cost tens of thousands of lives.

...The US has been critical in defusing previous crises in the past. But it is harder to place faith in the Trump administration...

Seven decades ago, independence and partition posed Kashmir the choice between two nations. When its ruler agreed to accede to India, New Delhi guaranteed it autonomy except in matters such as foreign affairs and defence. In reality, that has been eroded over the years.... The scrapping of article 370 is in large part symbolic – but nonetheless hazardous for that. Lifting restraints on the purchase of land and permanent settlement by outsiders is almost as inflammatory: many fear a consequent demographic shift.... The consequences are likely to be grave.

The New York Times Editorial

India Tempts Fate in Kashmir, ‘The Most Dangerous Place in the World’

BY REVOKING THE SPECIAL STATUS of the mountainous territory, India is courting conflict with Pakistan.

The Indian government knows how incendiary its actions are.... There is still a good chance that the changes to the Constitution will end up before India’s Supreme Court. But the fires are already lit. The United States and China must not allow Kashmir to become a pawn in their ongoing disputes; on the contrary, the United States, China, the United Nations and other powers with influence over India and Pakistan must urgently do what they can to prevent India’s folly from escalating into a perilous and unpredictable regional crisis.

The Washington Post

This is the Modi government’s darkest moment

By Mili Mitra, Editor, Global Opinions
August 6, 2019

WHEN INDIAN PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi’s government embraced communal and anti-Muslim rhetoric that fostered violence against minorities, many Indians refused to lay any responsibility at its doorstep.

When it passed legislation that would effectively discriminate against Muslim immigrants seeking citizenship — as millions of primarily Muslim ethnic Bengalis living in Assam faced the prospect of exclusion and deportation — many looked the other way.

And when it banned 86 percent of the country’s currency, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income Indians and resulting in an estimated 105 deaths, many justified the move as for the greater good.

But now, as the Modi government places political leaders under house arrest, risks violence along the Pakistan border and reneges on a constitution promise without debate or deliberation, Indians can no longer afford to stay silent. The administration is making India less democratic and stable, one authoritarian step at a time.... It’s hard to overstate what this means for Kashmir, India and South Asia as a whole. The announcement could have disastrous consequences for Kashmir’s tenuous equilibrium...risks destabilizing the region, engendering violence and further alienating Kashmiris.... And while some hope that India’s Supreme Court has grounds to reverse the move, it is unclear whether the court will intervene....In the years to come.... India will move even closer to becoming a Hindu rashtra.

August 7, 2019

MANY VICTIMS OF THE ORIGINAL Partition were women who were raped or who jumped into wells to avoid being raped. Now young Indian men seem to think another historic opportunity has opened up.

There is no dispute about the disputed territory of Kashmir, India announced this week. Your land, Kashmiris, is our land, it said…. (The) world’s conscience is distracted. The United States has already hinted that what happens in the caged paradise is India’s internal business. Also, a country that can’t secure its own Walmarts is unlikely to help restore the internet or the dignity of Kashmiris.

Mohammed Hanif

China, Pakistan’s oldest ally, has been training its Muslim Uighur population to dance and smile for the cameras in detention camps. Russia and Israel are India’s close allies. The first prince of the world’s Muslim community, the Saudi Mohammed bin Salman, has called Mr. Modi his brother.

I follow one bit of paradise on Twitter. Sabbah Haji is the director of the Haji Public School in Breswana village, up in the Jammu mountains. She posts about the progress of her students, and the health of her horses and dogs. On Saturday, as online connections started to disappear, she wrote, "When our internet is killed, don’t forget we’re still in here.”

The next day: "Out of the blue, one company of Army in my village today. Arrived this evening. We are at 7,500 feet up in the middle of nowhere.”

And then there was silence.

The Economist
August 6, 2019

Modi’s Kashmir surprise

WITH BREATHTAKING speed, Narendra Modi’s government has acted to end the special status enjoyed by Indian-administered Kashmir. For 70 years this had given the disputed, Muslim-majority state of Jammu & Kashmir a limited degree of autonomy within India.... On August 5th a hefty package of proposed legislation was carried onto the floor of the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament. ... By afternoon the parliament had agreed to revoke Kashmir’s status as a state and divide it into two bits...ruled formally from Delhi, indefinitely.... In one night it pulled together a putsch involving the army, paramilitary forces, the cabinet and parliament, as well as India’s nominally non-partisan president... The region is braced for strife.

Pakistan decides to recall ambassador from New Delhi and expel the Indian envoy; suspends bilateral trade

Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) on Wednesday resolved to downgrade Pakistan's diplomatic relations with New Delhi and suspend all bilateral trade.

The Pakistan’s top security body’s meeting presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan was held to review the situation in the wake of India's decision to scrap the special status for occupied Kashmir. By repealing Article 370 of the constitution, people from the rest of India will now have the right to acquire property in Kashmir and settle there permanently.

According to a Dawn report, the meeting also decided to review the Pakistan-India bilateral arrangements, take the matter to the United Nations and observe the upcoming Independence Day on August 14 in solidarity with Kashmiris.

"PM directed that all diplomatic channels be activated to expose brutal Indian racist regime, design and human rights violations," a statement issued after the meeting said.

The premier also directed the armed forces to continue their vigilance.

The meeting attended by the top civilian and military leadership also decided to recall Pakistan's ambassador from New Delhi and expel the Indian envoy, reported Dawn.

"Our ambassadors will no longer be in New Delhi and their counterparts here will also be sent back," Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told ARY News.

Furthermore, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also president of the BJP, moved a bill to bifurcate the state into two union territories to be directly ruled by New Delhi.

Pakistan had strongly condemned the move and vowed to "exercise all possible options to counter the illegal steps" taken by India.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Imran constituted a seven-member committee to make recommendations to formulate Islamabad's legal, political and diplomatic response to the change in the status of occupied Kashmir by the Indian government.

Cabinet rejects the demand of President to allocate budget for entertainment and gifts

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan federal cabinet on Tuesday has rejected a demand of President Dr Arif Alvi who sought allocation of budget for "entertainment and gifts” and decided that he will be provided a special grant on a case to case basis.

"President Alvi has to meet heads of states and under diplomatic norms he has to present gifts to the state guests on a reciprocal basis. However, the prime minister rejected the demand and said the president will get special funds on a case to case basis,” said Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan at a press conference after the cabinet meeting.

According to a Dawn report, the federal cabinet also decided to bring down prices of naan and roti to their previous rates throughout the country.

"Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken a stern notice of increasing prices of naan and roti and decided to take immediate steps to revert them to their original rates,” shed added.

She said besides the cabinet meeting the prime minister also presided over a meeting on gas tariff and rates of naan and roti. She said the prime minister also called a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on Wednesday (today) aimed at reducing the gas tariff, especially for Tandoorwalas, and cutting the price of Atta (wheat flour) and duties on it.

At present naan is selling at Rs 12 to Rs 15 in different cities of the country. However, before an increase in the gas tariff and rates of wheat flour, naan price ranged between Rs8 and Rs10. Similarly, roti is available at Rs 10 to Rs 12 while its previous rate was Rs 7 to Rs 8.
