UN court rules in favour of Italian Marines, asks India to set Girone free

A UN arbitration court, on Monday, ruled that one of the Italian marines accused of killing two fishermen in 2012, who has been detained in New Delhi for more than four years, be set free to return home.

Two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, operating as part of a Vessel Protection Detachment (VPD), were detained in India in February 2012 after they opened fire in the direction of an Indian fishing trawler, resulting in the death of two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala.

Latorre was allowed to return to Italy owing to health problems, but India had refused to let Girone leave the country.

Earlier, the Supreme Court, on April 26, had ruled that Latorre could stay in Italy until September 30 after he had suffered a stroke.
