Rumours of affair with Trump; Nikki Haley says ‘highly offensive’, ‘disgusting’

WASHINGTON: US Ambassador Nikki Haley has slammed rumors that she was having an affair with President Donald Trump as "highly offensive" and "disgusting."

The rumors stem from author Michael Wolff of the best-seller "Fire and Fury," who suggested in an interview that Trump was having an affair and that the liaison was with someone detailed in his book.

Wolff wrote in his book that Haley, the most high-profile woman in Trump's administration, was positioning herself as the president's heir apparent.

In an interview with Politico's Women Rule podcast on Thursday, Haley shot down talk of being romantically involved with the US president.

"It is absolutely not true," Haley said. "It is highly offensive, and it's disgusting."

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, she hit back at Wolff's assertion in his book that she was spending a lot of private time with Trump on his presidential plane and in the Oval Office.

"I have literally been on Air Force One once and there were several people in the room when I was there," Haley said.

"He says that I've been talking a lot with the president in the Oval about my political future. I've never talked once to the president about my future and I am never alone with him."
----------
Michael Wolff in his book 'Fire and Fury' wrote that Haley was positioning herself as the Trump's heir apparent.
----------
Haley attributed the rumors to sexism from a "small group of men" uneasy with strong-willed women.

"Most men respect women but there is a small group of men, that if you just do your job and you try and do it well and you are outspoken about it, they resent it. And they think the only option is to bring you down," she said.

The former South Carolina governor who backed Trump rival Marco Rubio for the Republican nomination said she and Trump are in agreement on almost all policy issues.

"We get along great, and I agree with almost everything that he has done," she said.

REPUBLIC DAY 2018
BSF refuses to exchange sweets with Pakistan Rangers over ceasefire violations

BSF refuses to exchange sweets with Pakistan Rangers over ceasefire violations

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday refused to exchange sweets and greetings with their Pakistani counterparts - the Pakistan Rangers, on the occasion of the 69th Republic Day.

The move by the BSF came following the heightened tension between both countries along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir due to repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces leading to killing of soldiers and civilians on the Indian side.

13 people - including seven civilians - have been killed in recent ceasefire violations by Pakistan in Jammu alone. Congress, which is in opposition in Jammu and Kashmir, has likened the situation along the IB and LoC to a war.

The most recent death took place yesterday, when a soldier injured in firing on Wednesday died during treatment.

BSF sources said it was conveyed to the Pakistan Rangers on Thursday that no sweets will be exchanged on Republic Day. The BSF is on maximum alert along Punjab’s barbed wire fenced 553-km IB with Pakistan.

Indian security forces have said that they are responding to the ceasefire violations with "pin-pointed retaliation". "BSF is giving suitable and pin-pointed retaliation to unprovoked fire by Pakistani forces from across the IB in Jammu. At several locations, the enemy's firing positions, ammunition and fuel dump have been destroyed by precision firing of the border guarding force personnel," a BSF spokesperson was quoted as saying by PTI earlier this week.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has blamed India for the violations, with its army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa warning India against any "misadventure[s]". "Our commitment to abide by the ceasefire agreement of 2003 should never be misconstrued as response limitation. Indian aggression or any misadventure shall always get a most befitting response," Gen Bajwa was quoted as saying by PTI.

Border guards of both countries follow a tradition of exchanging sweets for the past several years on major religious festivals, like Eid and Diwali, and also during Independence Days of both countries and India's Republic Day.

RESPONSE TO KIM JONG'S 'NUCLEAR BUTTON IS ALWAYS ON MY DESK' THREAT
Trump taunts North Korea: My nuclear button is 'Much Bigger & More Powerful'

Trump taunts North Korea: My nuclear button is 'Much Bigger & More Powerful'

US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP escalated his war of words with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday evening, asserting that his "nuclear button" is "much bigger & more powerful" than the North Korean leader's and threatening that the U.S. arsenal "works."

The US President was responding to the North Korean leader’s New Year address wherein he threatened US with his country’s nuclear abilities. In a televised speech on Monday, Kim said, "the entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat.” He also said the North would mass produce nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles in 2018 for operational deployment and use the "nuclear button” if his country was threatened.

"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.' Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!" Trump tweeted.

The exchange represents a ratcheting up of rhetoric, after Trump in recent months had adopted a measured approach to North Korea - relative to last summer, when he warned of "fire and fury" - at the urging of his national security team.

Earlier Tuesday, however, Trump revived his derisive nickname for Kim - "rocket man" - in response to signs of relaxed tensions between South Korea and North Korea. South Korea agreed to an offer from North Korea for the two countries to talk ahead of next month's Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Kim said in his Monday address that he was willing to send a delegation of North Korean athletes to the Olympics.

In his Tuesday tweet, Trump wrote: "Sanctions and 'other' pressures are beginning to have a big impact on North Korea. Soldiers are dangerously fleeing to South Korea. Rocket man now wants to talk to South Korea for first time. Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not - we will see!"

Unsurprisingly, Trump's unorthodox tweet sent social media into a frenzy. Here are some reactions:

Many people online have expressed alarm at the apparently light-hearted use of nuclear threats by world leaders.

This is not the first time Trump and Kim have mocked each other. In 2017, Trump had warned that the US would have no choice but to "totally destroy” North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies. The US President also led a global campaign to pressure North Korea into giving up the development of nuclear-tipped missiles through sanctions. The United Nations has imposed unprecedented sanctions on North Korea over its weapons programmes.

North Korea regularly threatens to attack the United States, South Korea and Japan. It tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile in November, which it said was capable of delivering a warhead anywhere in the United States.

HINTS AT WITHDRAWING $255 MILLION AID

'No more'; Pakistan gave us lies, deceit in return for billions in aid: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at Pakistan and accused it of "lies and deceit" in return of the $33 billion aid the US gave it in the last 15 years.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools," Trump said in a strongly worded tweet.

"They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" Trump said in his first tweet of the year.

This is the strongest warning yet from the US president.

The US, which has provided Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid since 2002, said in August that it was withholding the $255 million until Pakistan did more to crackdown on terrorist groups.

An announcement from Trump was around the corner as reports emerged a couple of days ago saying the administration was strongly considering to withhold the $255 million in aid to Pakistan, reflecting dissatisfaction with Islamabad’s inaction against terror networks.

Earlier this month, Trump had already hinted that he may cut off the aid for good.

"We make massive payments every year to Pakistan. They have to help," he said in unveiling his national security strategy. And last week, Vice President Mike Pence told American troops during a visit to Afghanistan: "President Trump has put Pakistan on notice."

In August last year, the US had warned an angry Pakistan that it could lose its status as a privileged military ally if it continues giving safe haven to Afghan terrorist groups. One day after President Donald Trump unveiled a new strategy to force the Taliban to negotiate a political settlement with the Kabul government, his top diplomat upped the heat on Islamabad.

Trump had warned that Pakistan's support for the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network would have consequences, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had spelled these out.

"We have some leverage," Tillerson had told reporters, as he fleshed out Trump's speech, "in terms of aid, their status as a non-NATO alliance partner -- all of that can be put on the table."

As one of 16 "Non-NATO Major Allies," Pakistan benefits from billions of dollars in aid and has access to some advanced US military technology banned from other countries.

Relations between the US and Pakistan have nosedived since Trump declared in his South Asia policy that Pakistan "gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror.”
