Pakistan explodes with new property details of super-rich Nawaz Sharif

AS PAKISTANI POLITICS hurtles and hobbles towards its date with democracy on July 25, the entire political scene has now exploded with the Daily Mail of London publishing details of the mega empire-style properties allegedly bought by Nawaz Sharif with dirty money.

With political field already afire on account of charges of mega corruption and ongoing graft cases against Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, the Daily Mail report has added fuel to the narrative.

£7million - Avenfield House (above), is located in Park Lane, London, and has a view of Hyde Park

If Nawaz Sharif is proven to own the properties that the Daily Mail said he does, and if he is found guilty of the allegations, then he will go to jail for up to 14 years.

His two sons have already given up their Pakistani citizenship and are now citizens of the United Kingdom.

The Nawaz Sharif family, as per charges he faces, used corruption money to buy the Avenfield flats, and at least 21 other UK properties at grand Central London locations, in Mayfair, Chelsea and Belgravia.

The Daily Mail report took Pakistan by a storm and television news channels had a field day debating the issue.
-----------
"The total value of the properties is estimated at at least £32 million," the Daily Mail said. The findings of the Daily Mail took Pakistan by a storm and television news channels had a field day debating the issue.

Every time Nawaz Sharif goes to London, he resides at Avenfield. In fact, he has lived there since 1993, knocking four luxury flats together to make a single mansion, now worth at least £7 million.

Nawaz Sharif shares the properties with his sons, Hassan and Hussain, his daughter and political heir-apparent Maryam and her husband Muhammad Safdar.  All five are on trial in Pakistan.

£2.1million - Duke Street mansion. As the four-month trial has unfolded, the Sharifs have not called any witnesses, nor produced fresh documents

A three time prime minister, now disqualified for life by the Supreme Court because he is not a good person or morally upright (Sadiq and Amin), Sharif can hold no public office ever, because he did not declare a salary from a Dubai company when he last ran for office in 2013.

While the Sharifs face a court verdict in the next few days in case of the £7 million Avenfield House, located in Park Lane, London, with a view of the Hyde Park, cases regarding other properties are also pending.

But the Daily Mail has come up with details of yet another property which was so far unknown even to the most ardent opponents of Sharifs – 1, Hyde Park.

"The family has made huge profits from other sites which have not figured in court – such as the swankiest address of all, at One Hyde Park Place, which Nawaz Sharif’s son Hassan sold for £43 million," the Daily Mail said.

-----------
Ayaz Amir, a senior journalist and political analyst and at one time a member of Pakistani Parliament, said Pakistanis will be shocked to see the photographs of the properties published by the Daily Mail. In his comments during a talk show with well known host Syed Aysha Naz on Duniya TV channel, Amir said, "Sharam karo."

£800,000 - Drake House, Saint George Wharf, London.

The Daily Mail gave details of properties such as the £800,000 Drake House, Saint George Wharf, London; £2.4 million Cadogan Square, London; £2.1 million Duke Street mansion; £7 million Eaton Place, London; and £3 million Eaton Square in London.

Everything is now uncertain. Pakistanis are not sure if the elections will happen on July 25 or of these will be postponed. They do not know if the Sharifs will return from England, where they currently are. Nawaz Sharif's wife is under treatment in a London hospital. Pakistanis are not certain if the Sharifs will be convicted. They are not sure if the Sharifs will go to jail even if convicted.

The Sharifs, as per claims made by prosecutors, moved their money in and out of Britain, Switzerland, the Middle East and the British Virgin Islands. Details are in a ten-volume dossier submitted to the court.
-----------
At one stage during the trial, Nawaz Sharif told investigators that his grandfather ‘did not believe in documentation’ and therefore, details of how he came in possession of this money were not documented.
-----------
Sharif’s two sons, Hassan and Hussain, fled Pakistan and the country does not have any extradition treaty with Britain.

£3million - Eaton Square in London. The Pakistani investigators who assembled the case against the Sharifs told the MoS that far from being co-operative, Britain has provided almost no help

The Sharif properties came to be known as a result of the Panama Papers, millions of confidential documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca in April 2016.

At one stage during the trial, Nawaz Sharif told investigators that his grandfather ‘did not believe in documentation’ and therefore, details of how he came in possession of this money were not documented.

His claim that the assets were acquired with money gained from their investment in Qatar was found ‘false and concocted’ by investigators.
