WATCH THIS KID'S FULL throated cry for justice as she clenches her fist, promises nothing less than a revolution and makes you believe in the inevitability of the meek inheriting the earth. If I meet kids like her on a regular basis every week, I would start doubting less that this dream would come true.

Krantika Sharma is about 10 years of age. I ran into her in Ajnaudha Kalan village, Nabha, where she had delivered her piece a day earlier at a Baal Mela (Children's Fair). On December 9, I could only catch the last minute or so of her speech, and kicked myself for having missed most of it. But then Krantika won the competition. Winners were to repeat their act once again at the concluding ceremony next day —  which meant I could watch Krantika deliver her speech. I was right there in the front row, and did not move for hours lest I lose my spot.

Listen to it, and you'll know what impact it must have had upon me. Krantika is a Class V student from Govt Primary School, Village Jhans, Block Tanda in Hoshiarpur. There were hundreds of kids from Government Primary Schools from all over Punjab, and scores of their teachers, and they were all there on their own initiative. With no government backing or intervention. The Mela was a weekend affair – Saturday and Sunday. The hundreds of kids who participated in a number of competitions – songs, dance, general knowledge quiz, poetry, declamation, speeches, sports, gidha, bhangra – were a treat to watch.

Anyone who thinks government school teachers are a gone case should have been there. Thoroughly dedicated to their students, I saw the teachers mingling with the children, encouraging them, hugging them when they lost, jumping with joy and striking high fives when they won, and vowing to do better next time around – such are the moments that fill you with hope for a better future. If you find that hard to believe, listen to this Class V student.

I sought out her teacher, one Mr Narinder Arora, who proudly told me of other kids in his school, what all they do, the activities they undertake, the initiatives that students' are a part of.

How I wish that journalists had covered initiatives like this Baal Mela! I did see some perfunctory reports in vernacular dailies, but nothing that truly reflected the essence of the gathering. Yes, I do understand that there are bigger things happening – like Pakistan meddling in Gujarat elections and Rahul Gandhi temple-hopping, or vote-shopping – but then Krantika was promising a bigger, much bigger story: A storm brewing, a revolution coming.

You missed it, guys!

Visualise her speaking before a crowd of a few hundred people in a dusty ground, acoustics not very great, kids from not very rich homes, schools not flush with funds, facilities often lacking, and you will realise how odds are stacked against them. All glory to you, kid, and here's happy listening to a young revolutionary. Hope you do not get branded as an anti-national by the time you become a vote, or voter. (Is there a difference any longer?)

May be we’ll know — when Krantika takes on the subject, or a seaplane rider, or a temple hopper/shopper.
