MARKING NATIONAL PRESS DAY
Sniper Fire in Studio — NDTV, Republic TV and North Korean channel

The NDTV - Republic TV rivalry is simply not going away any time soon, and Nidhi Razdan of the NDTV marked the day with a thinly-veiled attack on A.R.nab Goswami and his Republic TV by calling it a North Korean channel and him as an anchor who chiefly pontificates from behind a desk.

During a debate on freedom of the press and state of the media, triggered in part by the decision of the Rajasthan Patrika to publish a blank editorial with a thick black border to register its strong opposition to the controversial criminal law ordinance of the Vasundhara Raje government that puts restrictions on the media and gives protection to public servants, panellists debated the relative freedoms available to the media under various dispensation.

As Nidhi Razdan repeatedly grilled BJP's Seshadri Chari over why Prime Minister Narendra Modi refuses to hold press conferences, Chari said the PM holding press conferences had nothing to do with the freedom of the media.

And then without much provocation, Chari said one problem was that today, the media is being run by anchors and not journalists. To this, Nidhi Razdan said she agreed with him and understands who and which channel was Chari's remark meant for.

"I know you are talking about the North Korean TV channel. I hope they are listening to your advice... Some of us have been journalists for almost 20 years now, reporting and anchoring, while there are some others sitting behind a desk and pontificating...since you brought that up, I understand who you meant it for," Nidhi Razdan said, though it remained unclear if Chari was able to grasp as to what effect his remarks were being interpreted as.

No one will bet money that a response won't come from Republic TV which is often referred to as North Korean TV channel on the NDTV. Goswami routinely brings up references to former NDTV journalist Barkha Dutt in the context of Nira Radia tapes.

Last time Nidhi Razdan had made news was when she got into a slanging match with BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, asking him to either apologise for accusing her and NDTV of running an anti-Modi agenda or leave the show. Days later, NDTV’s Prannoy Roy was raided, and many linked it to the spat on live TV.

The National Press Day in India is observed as a symbol of a free and responsible press.

The BJP had to face a lot of flak after the Rajasthan government promulgated on September 6 the Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Ordinance, 2017. It provided immunity to the serving and retired public servants, judges and magistrates from probe and prosecution on complaints about their alleged offences without prior sanction by the authorities. It also bars the media from reporting on such accusations till the sanction is given.

Ever since the promulgation of the Ordinance, the newspaper has been publishing a huge "lock" on its front page, with the tagline, Jab Tak Kaala, Tab Tak Taala (It is locked till the black law is in force).

The Bill to replace the Ordinance has since been referred to a select committee of the House for reconsideration. The Ordinance remains in force, as does the snide sniper fire in NDTV and Republic TV studios.
