Will not implement draconian act CAA in Punjab: Amarinder

LUDHIANA, December 30: Lashing out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for trying to change the Constitution’s preamble, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday called upon all Indians to unite against their divisive and dangerous attempts to destroy the nation’s secular fabric with the draconian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

His government will not allow implementation of CAA in Punjab and the Congress would continue to fight it tooth and nail, declared Captain Amarinder, addressing Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) leaders and workers at a protest march and dharna, joined by senior Congress leaders including AICC secretary in-charge of Punjab, Asha Kumari, Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar, and other senior leaders such as Preneet Kaur, Manpreet Singh Badal, Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Balbir Singh Sidhu, and Ravneet Singh Bittu, besides a large number of party MLAs.

The BJP could not get away with its nefarious designs, the Chief Minister warned, pointing out that protests against the draconian Act were going on currently in 16 states, including Punjab.

Reading out the preamble, he said it was the very basis of India’s foundation, which nobody could disturb.  While Articles of the Constitution are amended from time to time, not just in India but across the world, no one can tolerate tinkering with its basic structure, he added, pointing out that even the United Nations had termed the CAA discriminatory.

Referring to the manhandling of AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh, Captain Amarinder said the police could not have indulged in such behaviour without CM Yogi Adiyanath’s knowledge. "Aren’t you ashamed of such actions,” he asked Yogi Adiyanath, warning that the Congress would not forget this incident and tables would turn one day.

Pointing out that MIT students had also passed a resolution against CAA, the Chief Minister observed that while the entire world was expressing concern over the ramifications of the legislation, "those sitting in Delhi continue to be adamant, refusing to pay heed to the voice of the nation.” Captain Amarinder pointed out that Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji had also taught secularism, as manifest in his words "na koi hindu, na koi musalman, sab rab de bande” (nobody is a Muslim or a Hindu, all are God’s people).

The protest march, held in Punjab’s economic heartland, would help send the anti-CAA message across India, asserted the Chief Minister.

In an informal chat with mediapersons later, Captain Amarinder reiterated that his government would continue to oppose the Centre’s attempt to destroy India’s secular character and change the Preamble of the Constitution. On the manhandling of Priyanka by UP police, he termed the incident shameful. It was shameful, said the Chief Minister, that Guru Nanak Dev ji’s secular ideology was being attacked while his 550th birth anniversary was being celebrated across the world.

Earlier, Senior party leader and Finance Minister Manpreet Badal recalled Mahatama Gandhi’s removal from a train in South Africa, prompting him to warn the White officials that he will throw them out of his country. Likening the current situation with that incident, Manpreet said if Modi tried to send Indians out of the country, the Congress will turn him (Modi) out of India. Noting that the BJP had secured a mere 39% votes in the last Lok Sabha elections, he asserted that with the remaining 61% supporting the opposition parties, the Modi government could not get away with the enactment of such black laws.

PPCC president Sunil Jakhar lambasted the `kale angrez sitting in Delhi’ (BJP-led central government) for trying to implement the agenda which the pre-Independence`goras’ (Whites) had failed to execute. The people accepted the demonetisation and GST assaults patiently but had not lost all their patience, he said, pointing to the country-wide anti-CAA protests, led by students. Pointing to Modi’s shocking claims of identifying people by their clothes, Jakhar flayed the tyranny of the NDA government, warning that no citizen would escape the ill-effects of the Centre’s actions. He took a dig at the BJP leadership’s `tukde tukde gang’ remarks, saying the NDA itself was a `tukde tukde’ government, which was out to divide the country.

Lok Sabha Ludhiana Lok Sabha MP Ravneet Singh Bittu termed the CAA a black law, which majority of the states would not implement since about 70% of the chief ministers were now from the Congress and other Opposition parties, marking a clear decline for the BJP graph.

The chief minister earlier also participated in the protest march that started from Daresi Ground and culminated at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Matarani Chowk.

Do not schedule any entertainment program during 'Martyrdom Week': Bajwa

The Higher Education and Languages Minister, Punjab, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa has directed all the Government run universities and colleges to not schedule any entertainment program during these days keeping in view the fact that it was during this period that Mata Gujri ji and 4 Sahibzade of Dasam Pita Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji attained martyrdom for the sake of religion, fighting against tyranny.

The minister further said that the entire Sikh circles are in mourning these days known as the 'Martyrdom Week' and that explains why during the last week of December, celebrations and entertainment programs are not considered appropriate.

In a press communique here today, Bajwa further added that the elder Sahibzade of Dasam Pita, Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji attained martyrdom at Chamkaur Sahib fighting against invading mughal hordes and after 2 days, younger Sahibzade Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji made the supreme sacrifice when they were bricked alive at Sirhind.

Calling the sacrifice of Sahibzade as unparalleled in the annals of the world, Bajwa said that the sentiments of not only the Sikh community but the whole Punjabi community are deeply connected with these sacrifices and that is why the written communications are being sent to the universities and colleges to not hold any entertainment programs in their institutions during the 'Martyrdom Week'.
------------
------------
It may be mentioned here that Bir Devinder Singh, Sr. Vice President Shriomani Akali Dal (Taksali) has on Friday condemned the authorities of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar for holding the 35th North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival (YUVFORIA-2019) in the campus of the university during the 'Martyrdom week'.

Punjab cabinet minister, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa (in pic) has inaugurated the said youth festival on 25th December.

On the issue of North Zone Inter University Youth Festival being held at Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, the minister divulged that the university officials have apprised him that the dates of the festival are decided by the Union Government one year in advance. But still the university officials have been directed to inform the concerned ministries of the Union Government to not schedule any entertainment program during this period.

Bajwa also disclosed that the private universities, colleges and other institutions have also been instructed to not hold any entertainment programs during these days.

YUVFORIA-2019
Why is GNDU holding a Youth Festival during the Sahibzade Martyrdom Week?
27.12.19 - Bir Devinder Singh*
Why is GNDU holding a Youth Festival during the Sahibzade Martyrdom Week?

Its appallingly regrettable that Guru Nanak Dev University is hosting 35th North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival (YUVFORIA-2019) at Amritsar from 25th to 29th December in utter disregard of a terribly eventful week of the Sikh History, when Guru Gobind Singh sacrificed five members of his family and many of beloved Sikhs during this week.

Guru Gobind Singh’s two younger Sahibzade and Mata Gujri ji were subjected to horrendous tortures during this week. They were arrested from village Saherri near Morinda in the early hours on 25th of December in the year 1704 and were kept in the lock up at Kotwali (Police station) Morinda for the chilling night and next day on 26th of December they were forced to undertake this nerve wrecking journey on foot ( Approximately 16 miles) up to Sirhind in the chilling weather condition despite the fact that they were empty stomach for almost three days,  where they were to be produced before Wazeed Khan the then Governor of Sirhind.

They were again locked up for the night at the top of the coldest tower without any shelter and were also not allowed to eat anything whatsoever. The following day on 27th of December the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh aged nine and seven respectively were produced before the Governor of Sirhind in his court, who ordered to unleash brutality upon them for blatantly refusing   conversion to Islam.

After the series of horrible tortures, they both were finally order by Wazeed Khan to be bricked alive. Hence the Sahibzade ultimately made supreme sacrifice to uphold the dignity and the value system of the Sikh faith. The same day Mata Gujri ji also passed away in the cold tower. Their mortal remains were cremated on 28th of December near Sirhind. This horrendous period is recalled and observed every year by the Sikh community with great reverence and pain. Millions of devout Sikhs assemble at Fatehgarh Sahib to pay homage to the great martyrs of the Sikh faith.

I wonder how during this  period the authorities of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar has consented to host the 35th North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival (YUVFORIA-2019) in the campus of the University at Amritsar in utter disregard of the religious sentiments of the entire Sikh community.

This kind of insensitivity and derision on the part of the Guru Nanak Dev University is not at all acceptable. If the leading University of the State fails in its obligation to  bear in faculty of its  psyche, the   sense of History and the sense of solemn occasions, than from whom do we expect such subtle adherences?

I would beseech the attention of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib to take strong cognizance of this barefaced amiss, committed by the University and I would also appeal to the Government of Punjab to issue directive to all its departments and semi-governmental organizations not to hold any event of fun and frolic in future, on the martyrdom day of the Chhote Sahibzade of Guru Gobind Singh.

SAD should clarify their stand on NRC: Amarinder

Slamming the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for their double standards on the issue of NRC and CAA, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday asked the party to clarify their stand on support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of which they were an ally in the central government.

The SAD had supported the ruling NDA’s Citizenship Amendment Act in Parliament, but had since come out with conflicting statements on the legislation, as well as the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Captain Amarinder pointed out, lambasting the Akalis for misleading the people on these sensitive issues.

In a hard-hitting reaction in the wake of the recent statements of SAD president Sukhbir Badal and Rajya Sabha member Naresh Gujral, seeking inclusion of Muslims in CAA, the Chief Minister said it was patently obvious that the Akalis were playing double games in the matter. It was clear, he said, that the SAD leaders had decided to backtrack on their earlier stand in view of the public protests and backlash triggered by CAA/NRC.

This was not the first time the Akalis had shown such dual standards with regard to their relations with the BJP, said Captain Amarinder, pointing to the SAD’s support to Om Prakash Chautala’s INLD in the Haryana assembly elections even while continuing to be a part of the NDA. In fact, even while siding with INLD in Haryana, the SAD had allied with BJP in Punjab, where by-elections were being held at the same time in a couple of constituencies, he added.

It was time the SAD clarified their stand on their alliance with the NDA, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the people wanted to know whether the Akalis favoured BJP’s divisive and hardline ideology on key issues, including those that affect the Indian Constitutional principles and values. The people are no longer willing to be fooled by the SAD’s dual standards and misleading statements, he said.

Such contradictory stands and statements had exposed the fact that the Akalis were only interested in promoting their vested political interests, and had no ideological principles on any issue of national importance.

Amarinder hails Jharkhand poll results as rejection of BJP’s divisive politics

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday hailed the Congress-JMM-RJD victory in the Jharkhand Assembly polls as rejection of the divisive politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Welcoming the election results, the Chief Minister said the reversal of the ruling BJP’s fortunes, which had begun earlier this year, has taken another leap forward with these polls. The results had resoundingly crushed BJP’s ambitions of spreading its tentacles across the length and breadth of the country, and paved the way for the creation of a BJP-Mukta Bharat, he added.

With these results, BJP’s divisive agenda had not only been exposed but had also been rejected outright by the people, said Captain Amarinder, adding that the mandate marked the defeat of the ruling party’s communal politics.

Coming at a time when a strong anti-BJP wave was sweeping the nation, as manifest in the widespread public protests against the unconstitutional CAA and NRC of the central government, the Jharkhand results validate the Congress party’s secular agenda, said the Chief Minister.

People want development and progress, in the backdrop of the Constitutional ethos of  unity in diversity; they do not want to be divided by vested interests in the name of religion, Captain Amarinder said, adding that the BJP had patently failed to read the people’s mood and pulse.

The people of India, especially its large youth populace, had seen through BJP’s all-round failure, as evidenced in the growing unemployment, deepening economic woes and escalating prices etc, and voted against its regressive policies in favour of development and growth, the Chief Minister asserted.

It is only a matter of time now for the saffron hue to be lifted from the nation’s face, and give way to a bright future for its people, the Chief Minister predicted, adding that false promises and fake claims cannot take any political party far - something which the BJP has dogmatically failed to appreciate or accept.
