PAY YOUR INCOME TAX? What an idea, sir jee!

Amarinder Singh comes up with revolutionary idea to save your money

Chandigarh, February 5: Punjab's Amarinder Singh government has got a brand new idea, and many are finding it refreshingly wonderful. The only problem is that so far, it is just an idea.

Here's the big idea: All MLAs, including ministers, should pay their own income tax.

You know who has been paying their income tax so far? You. Who else?

Welcome to the governmental arrangement about ensuring timely and regular income tax payments of your elected legislators all these years -- all such payments have been always made from the public exchequer.

Rest of the people of Punjab are expected to pay their own income tax. The MLAs' tax is paid by the people. It was an arrangement under earlier regimes of Captain Amarinder Singh as well as Prakash Singh Badal. And even now, the CM has merely floated an idea.

Also, the idea has not been floated on the basis of any principle. Perish such a wayward thought. Captain Amarinder Singh has got this brainwave only on account of "the severe financial constraints faced by the government."

"Currently being paid by the government, these taxes are draining the exchequer of the much needed funds," the Chief Minister is said to have pointed out.

So, citizens were officially informed about a brand new method of tax payment, termed in the official statement as "proposal for self-payment of taxes by all elected representatives, including himself."

So far, every farmer who has been buying Colgate tooth paste or dant-manjan had been paying even the income tax of Maharaja Amarinder Singh.
-----------
At least three MLAs that Punjab Today spoke to, including two from Congress and one from the Akali Dal, said the government proposal will effectively mean a huge wage cut. In such a circumstance, they suggested that the government will have to come up with a proposal to raise their salaries to undo the huge loss the chief ministerial idea can result to their bottomline.
-----------
But Punjabis can feel proud of this subaltern turn in their world view of taxes. Here is the brilliant press release writer of the Punjab government, tom-tomming it for the benefit of anyone who wants to cheer the move: "Punjab was possibly the only state in the country to follow the system of the government paying taxes for all ministers and MLAs."

The income tax paid by the Punjab government on this account stood at Rs. 11.08 crore, the CM said. Instead of Punjab government, please read Punjab's people.

Of this loot (it's the most polite word the Punjab Today desk could supply), Rs 10.72 crore was going towards payment of income tax of MLAs, while the remaining was for the ministers.

The CM's proposal came at the meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Fiscal Management.

The suggestion, if implemented, would lead to a saving of this entire amount, which the state could then use for various important development works and implementation of welfare schemes, many of which are facing serious hurdles due to paucity of funds.

Amarinder Singh's earlier pleas to his Congress colleagues and rich farmers to give up free power subsidy did not result in any takers. He reiterated the same appeal once again.

None of the prominent ministers, advisors or bureaucrats in the meeting rushed to embrace his appeal or declared they will ensure their rich friends will do the needful.
