The Shiromani Akali Dal today dismissed the Punjab Congress Manifesto for the forthcoming assembly poll as "a damp squib and a utterly directionless document of a frustrated party. It contains promises which The Congress party actually opposed when in power."
SAD described the manifesto as just "a confused bundle of often repeated, brazen lies."
"These are the same lies which Captain Amarinder Singh had been trying to sell to people of Punjab for nearly one year. But seeing that the Punjabis were merely mocking him because of his low credibility, the Congress has now tried to use Dr Manmohan Singh for the purpose. But instead of increasing the credibility of these promises, the exercise has merely delivered a blow to his own image and lowered the prestige of the high office he once held. They should not have done this disservice to a former Prime Minister forcing him to tell lies which he himself has never supported as PM, " said the SAD Secretary General Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in a statement here.
But it was also an admission by Capt Amarinder Singh and other Punjab Congress leaders that they knew that Punjabis don't trust their word.
"The congress manifesto is full of promises which the Congress party never fulfilled when in power. The irony could not have been more stark. Here was a Former Chief Minister who had put a total ban on all recruitment's in Punjab now promising jobs for everyone but contradicts himself by promising unemployment at the same time. Here was a former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who vehemently opposed Mr Parkash Singh Badal's pleas for a debt waiver to farmers now promising to take steps to waive loans. Who has forgotten how Dr Manmohan Singh gave Rs 70,000 crore drought relief to farmers of Maharashtra, Vidharbha and Kerala but not a single penny to the country's bread winners Punjab farmers who had suffered the most in that drought. It was funny and ironical to watch Captain Amarinder Singh who had offered a silver spade to Indira Gandhi for digging SYL now talking about not giving Punjab waters to other states." said Dhindsa
Dhindsa further said that the manifesto is shocking in its silence on punishment to the guilty of 1984 massacre of thousands of innocent Sikhs. There not a single word on how the Congress party proposes to deal with the likes of Jagdish Tyler and Sajjan Kumar. It's a shameless silence especially when they are addressing the people of Punjab.
It talks of eradicating drug menace in four weeks which shows that the congress either does not see the problem as serious as it had been claiming it to be or does not understand the problems of those who unfortunately fall a prey to it, said Dhindsa.
The manifesto also shows that the Congress party is not even serious about Punjab or about their chances in the forthcoming poll.
