Four die in landslide near Vaishno Devi Shrine

Four pilgrims were killed in a landslide and nine including a 10-year-old boy were injured after a big stone rolled down and hit them near cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in Reasi district of Jammu.

Ajit Kumar Sahu, CEO, Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, said the landslide occurred after rainfall.

"Our team went to the site as soon as the incident was reported to us," he said. Sahu further said that they always try to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Reasi, Sanjay Rana said that nine people were also injured in the incident.

While seven of them were given first aid, two others were admitted to Katra hospital with serious injuries, he said.

The yatra to the cave shrine, which was disrupted for some hours, later resumed.

Heavy rains usually result in landslides on roads leading to Bhawan in Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.

Radicals threaten Irom Sharmila for her decision to contest polls, marry an ‘outsider’

Radicals threaten Irom Sharmila for her decision to contest polls, marry an ‘outsider’

A radical organisation in Manipur has threatened the "Iron Lady" of Manipur Irom Sharmila against going ahead with her decision to contest elections and marry an outsider.

Manipuri human rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has announced that she would end her 16-year-old fast against alleged atrocities by the Indian Army in the northeastern state this month, has been threatened by a local radical group.

While announcing her decision, she had also told media that she planned to marry.

The threat was given by a lesser-known secessionist group called Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak (ASUK).

The group backs the idea of a sovereign Manipur, free from Delhi’s control.

In the threat they said that some former revolutionary leaders were assassinated after deviating from the cause and getting elected as people’s representatives.

"All those who joined electoral politics did so knowing well that it was a dead-end,” ASUK chairman N Oken and vice-chairman Ksh Lab Meitei said in a statement on Wednesday, as per reports in The Hindustan Times.

The secessionist group also expressed its displeasure over Sharmila's decision to wed "non-local man" Desmond Coutinho, a Goan-British activist. According to ASU, a marriage between "Indians" and people of Kangleipak – the ancient name of Manipur – was partly responsible for the ongoing drive to protect indigenous peoples. The group also claimed that Coutinho could be a spy for intelligence agencies, planted to impede their fight against AFSPA and "colonial domination".

She also said that she would marry her fiancé, writer and activist Desmond Coutinho, a British citizen of Goan origin. In an interview to The Telegraph in 2011, Irom said that while she was in love, her supporters were against the idea of her getting married.

Irom says in the interview that Desmond's letters and thoughts made her fall for him and she has carefully kept them in a box by her bedside. Eventually, the two got engaged. After her announcement to end her fast on July 26, 2016, Irom expressed her desire to get married after coming out of prison on August 9.

Sharmila, who has spent most of the last 16 years in custody in an Imphal hospital, is to be released on August 9.

Yeh padosi hai ki maanta hi nahin hai: Rajnath Singh on Pakistan

Yeh padosi hai ki maanta hi nahin hai: Rajnath Singh on Pakistan

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who returned to India after attending SAARC Home Ministers conference in Islamabad on Thursday evening, today briefed the Rajya Sabha on his visit, saying he has put India’s stand across in Islamabad. He informed the Parliament that he had urged member counties "not to glorify or patronise terrorists”.

Rajnath Singh, in a sarcastic comment on Pakistan while telling parliament about his brief visit to Islamabad, said: "All our PMs have done their best to improve relations with our neighbours but yeh padosi hai ki maanta hi nahin hai".

"Our Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had famously said that friends can change but neighbours can’t change. Our former PM Dr Manmohan Singh had expressed solidarity and said Pakistan is also a victim of terror. But they don’t consider themselves as our neighbours,” Singh added.

Singh also appreciated the unity of the House against terrorism. "It reflects the country's determination to fight terrorism," he said.

The home minister also said he was "hestitant to say if the host were courteous... I don't want to comment on it. I have no qualms or complaints". He added that "India is known globally for its 'meheman nawaazi (hospitality)."
Reacting to reports of a 'blackout' of his speech during the SAARC meeting, he said, "It is true that Doordarshan, ANI & PTI reporters who had come from India were not allowed to enter."

He further said that "I will not comment whether Pakistan was right or wrong in not allowing coverage”.
"Unhe jo karna tha unhone kia, mai uss sambandh mein koi pratikriya vyakt nhi karna chahta. Mujhe koi shikwa, shikayat nhi,” Rajnath added.

Responding to questions in Rajya Sabha after making statement on yesterday's conference, the Minister also said that after the meeting was over, Pakistan's Home Minister, who was the host, invited the participants for lunch but left in a car soon thereafter.

"Keeping in mind the country's prestige, I did what I should have done. I have no complaints. I had not gone there for lunch".

The Congress also welcomed Singh’s stern speech asking to stop encouraging terror groups and "glorification" of terrorists.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad condemned the protests by Hafiz Saeed’s organisation against Singh’s visit,"If Home Minister did not receive respect and honour due to him in Pakistan during his visit as per protocol, we condemn it,” Azad said.

Assam attack: 14 killed after militants open fire in market

Fourteen civilians have been killed and several others injured after terrorists opened fire at a market at Assam. One of the militants was also killed, with police recovering one AK-56 rifle from his possession. Security forces, however, were unable to capture any of the other assailants.

The incident occurred at Balajan Tiniali in Kokrajhar town; about 220 km west of Guwahati, when 3-4 masked gunmen, dressed in black, indiscriminately began firing at the crowded market. The terrorists also lobbed a grenade that ravaged three shops.

Reports say security forces have killed one terrorist but the rest escaped.

"At least three-four militants attacked the market place. Grenades were thrown...some militants are on the run," Assam’s director general of police Mukesh Sahay said.

Sahay also said that they suspected the gunmen to be part of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Songbijit (NDFB-S) faction.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attacks and also said, "Our Govt will take stern action against these extremist outfits”.

The CM also announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to next of kin of people who died and Rs 1 lakh for for the injured.

Minister of state, home affairs, Kiren Rijiju also responded to the attack, saying, "The Kokrajhar incident has come as a shock. (It is a) very dastardly and unfortunate attack. We have to be certain of elements behind Kokrajhar attack... cannot give official figures right now.”

Kokrajhar is the base for the Bodoland Territorial Council; the police suspect the militants were rebels of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland, which has been fighting for a separate homeland for the region's ethnic Bodo people.

Kejriwal looses war; HC tells him Jung is the King

Kejriwal looses war; HC tells him Jung is the King

Delhi continues to remain a union territory under the Constitution with the Lieutenant Governor (LG) as its administrative head, High court today ruled. The Delhi high court on Thursday told the Aam Aadmi Party government that Delhi's Lieutenant Governor is not required to act on the advice of the Delhi cabinet.

The decision comes as a big blow to kejriwal as he has been in a long turf war with LG Najeeb Jung.

The Delhi High Court bench headed by Chief Justice G Rohini ruled that National Capital Territory of Delhi continues to be a Union Territory and the Lieutenant Governor is its administrative head. It means that Delhi, even if it has an elected Assembly and a chief minister, does not have powers like other states.

In a major set-back for the AAP government, the court also added that the Anti-Corruption Branch cannot initiate investigation against central government officials.

The court's judgement came on nine different petitions arising out of the spat between the Lt Governor and Delhi's AAP government over the power to appoint bureaucrats in the national capital and other issues.

The Delhi government had argued that in a democratic set up there cannot be two reporting authorities. The Centre however had contended that as a Union Territory, Delhi was not a full-fledged state, and that control over its government rests in the hands of the Union Home Ministry.

Aam Aadmi Party defended itself saying they will move the Supreme Court to challenge the judgement.

"We will move the Supreme Court against the HC verdict," Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain said on Thursday.

"If the Delhi government cannot take decisions in favour of the people, then what is the use of an elected government?" AAP's Delhi unit convenor Dilip Pandey said.

"We humbly differ with the judgement of the High Court. It is important to approach the Supreme Court to protect the rights of Delhiites," he said.
