Government agrees to discuss Kashmir issue in Rajya Sabha

Opposition parties on Tuesday once again sought a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. The government agreed and said a discussion will take place on Wednesday.

Raising the issue, Naresh Athawale of the Samajwadi Party (SP) wanted to know when a discussion on the ongoing situation in Jammu and Kashmir would take place.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Opposition would also help in controlling the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and urged the government to send an all party delegation to the state.

Earlier, Azad referred to the situation and said "curfew has entered 31st day in Kashmir today. We don't want to accuse the government on the situation; rather we are ready to help control the situation there. Innocent women and children are dying. Your security forces are dying. Why are you shying away from debate?".

As the members had some arguments over the issue, Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien intervened to say there ought not to be any politics over the Kashmir issue.

"Kashmir is not an issue to fight and to score political points. All of us are concerned it should be solved with the help of all people," Kurien said.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, however, said we have asked the Home Minister and debate can be held tomorrow as the government too wants to bring Kashmir developments to the mainstream.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh walked in to the House and promptly concurred with Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad for a discussion on the Kashmir situation tomorrow.

Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said there was no problem as both sides have agreed to discuss the matter. Singh also admitted that the situation was "serious" and sought the support of all sides in resolving the "complicated problem".

"We will resolve it through everyone's cooperation," he told the Upper House. Earlier, Azad complimented various parties raising the issue, for sharing the pain which Kashmir was going through.

IT Dept recovers Rs 130 crore unaccounted wealth from AAP MLA

Bringing fresh trouble for the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi, the house of an MLA of his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was raided on Tuesday by income tax officials, resulting in recovery of unaccounted wealth worth Rs. 130 crore.

The department has already seized unaccounted cash and jewellery of nearly Rs 1 crore from Tanwar and his brother. Tanwar has been questioned by the Income Tax Department twice in the recent past after the raid.

Kartar Singh Tanwar, who was earlier with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), termed the raid as "witch-hunt" by the BJP-led NDA government. Tanwar is AAP MLA from Chhatarpur.

Reports say that the IT department said the recent raid revealed that transactions for buying farm houses in Chattarpur and Ghitorni were being done in cash by Tanwar and his associates.

The department has also allegedly found a large number of documents showing unaccounted and benami properties. An assessment of the value of these transactions is being done.

Ex-Arunachal CM Kalikho Pul, who led rebellion against Cong, found dead

Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister and Congress rebel Kalikho Pul was found dead at his residence on Tuesday. He allegedly hanged himself.

No suicide note was found from Pul's residence, news agency ANI reported quoting Union home ministry sources.

Further, the situation is tense in Itanagar as Pul's supporters protested at chief minister Pema Khandu's residence, ANI said. Union home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu about Pul's death.
The situation is tense in Itanagar as Pul's supporters protested at chief minister Pema Khandu's residence.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed shock "at the untimely and tragic demise" of Kalikho Pul, ANI reported.

"I am really shocked, I don't know what extreme reasons lead to this," said Congress party member Ninong Ering, to ANI.

PM Narendra Modi also tweeted his condolences : My thoughts are with the family & supporters of Kalikho Pul on his sad demise. His service to Arunachal Pradesh will be remembered.

Pul had been chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for four-and-a-half months in early 2016, but had to resign in the wake of an adverse Supreme Court verdict in July 2016.

"He was staying in CM's House, maybe loneliness crept into him. When your mind is empty, its a devils workshop ...As per his (CM's) last conversation with him, he was positive about the state. He said he was sure people will choose him again," Ering said.

In February, Pul was sworn in as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh with the support of 18 dissident Congress lawmakers, two independents and 11 BJP lawmakers who gave him outside support in the 60-member Assembly.

Before that, Nabam Tuki was chief minister. He was dismissed following days of turmoil, after 21 of the 47 Congress MLAs - including Pul -rebelled against him. Arunachal Pradesh was placed under President's Rule on January 26. (Courtesy : TOI)

A former Maoist turned gangster was killed on Monday during an exchange of fire with police at Shadnagar town near Hyderabad, officials said.

Late on Sunday night, the special police team of Telangana State police had rounded up a house located at millennium Township in Shadnagar town of Mahbubnagar district after receiving an alert about the movement of renegade Maoist Md Nayeemuddin.

On Monday morning, a gun man of Nayeemuddin opened fire on the police and in the resultant encounter; Nayeemuddin was gunned down, Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma said.

Mahabubanagar district Superintendent of Police Rema Rajeswari told reporters that one AK47 was found and a pistol was recovered from Nayeem's vehicle.

The police officer said an extortion case was registered against a suspected person in Nizamabad district. The suspect had demanded Rs 1 crore.

"An investigation team and local police reached here following information about the movement of the suspect in a white Ford Endeavour," she said.

Nayeem or Mohammed Nayeemuddin was an extortionist named in several high-profile cases, the police say, including the murder of a senior police officer in 1993.

The gangster had escaped from police custody 11 times.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Telangana for the first time yesterday, was briefed about the encounter in a meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval this morning.

Allahabad school principal, 8 teachers quit after ‘ban’ on national anthem for being 'un-Islamic'

Allahabad school principal, 8 teachers quit after ‘ban’ on national anthem for being 'un-Islamic'

The principal and teachers of a school in Allahabad have reportedly resigned after the school authorities refused them permission to organise a programme on Aug. 15 on the occasion of Independence Day. The programme would have included singing of the national anthem and a Saraswati Vandana, but the school authorities apparently said the words "Bharata Bhagya Vidhata" were un-Islamic, and hence the programme could not be allowed.

The order was passed by Mohammad Zia-ul Haq, Manager of MA Convent School in Sadiabad locality of Allahabad. Situated in the densely populated Muslim dominated locality, the school has a total of 330 students.
"The school has 200 Hindu students while remaining 130 are Muslims. How can he ban things like Vande Mataram and national anthem citing stupid religious reasons. I left the school as soon as I heard about this. Eight more teachers have also left the job as this is not acceptable at all,” said Ritu Shukla the Principal of the school.

School manager, Mohd Zialul Haq said the orders were passed when some Muslim parents objected that their children will not sing songs which are against their religion.

"National anthem has a line ‘Bharat bhagya vidhata’ which is against Islam as ALLAH is our bhagya vidhata. How can we say Bharat has made our destiny,” he questioned, adding that "In the national anthem, the country has been described as being bigger and more important than ‘mazhab’ (religion) and ‘khuda’ (god) which would be unacceptable to any true Muslim.”

The school, M A Convent, is a private institution with classes from nursery to eighth. The school has around 330 students.
