Arvind Kejriwal's Spat With Amarinder Singh Gets Uglier With Every Tweet

Arvind Kejriwal's Spat With Amarinder Singh Gets Uglier With Every Tweet

Twitter has now become the preferred sparring platform for many, and the past week has been rather eventful for us Indians. Take, for instance, Twitter wars between tennis champion Sania Mirza and cricket commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, then the several bouts between cricketer Virender Sehwag and British TV journalist Piers Morgan and now – in continuum – the sparring between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh.

The two engaged in a war of words after Kejriwal accused the Congress’ Punjab CM hopeful of using "drug money” in his campaign. Singh put out a stinging response to Kejriwal, saying he was "hallucinating” and seeing things that "don’t exist”. The two leaders have been increasingly trading barbs on Twitter as the Assembly election nears.

"Sir, ppl talking in Punjab that u using (Bikram Singh) Majithia’s drug money in ur campaign. Is it true? U had saved him from CBI enquiry 3 yrs back (sic),” Kejriwal tweeted. Majithia is Punjab’s Revenue Minister. Singh was quick to respond, saying Kejriwal was "seeing stars during the day”. "When your hopes crash from 100 to 30 & still sliding, you’re bound to hallucinate & see things that don’t exist,” Singh tweeted.

Kejriwal has been alleging a "nexus” between Congress and the ruling Akalis in poll-bound Punjab. He has dubbed Singh their "joint chief ministerial candidate”. "Sir, Badals closed corruption cases against u just a few months before elections. Why? Punjab asking what’s the deal?” Kejriwal had tweeted yesterday, responding to which Singh asked the AAP chief to "set his own house in order, before he sets his sights on Punjab”.

Kejriwal was referring to Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s clean chit to Singh in his alleged role in the Amritsar Improvement Trust land scam case.

In a very Trump versus Clinton fashion, Singh had had enough and challeneged Kejriwal to an open debate. "Now that you’ve shot your mouth, don’t scoot like you typically do!Show courage & come for an open debate. Choose the time, place & platform”, he said. Kejriwal, not one to back down, accepted his challenge: "I accept ur challenge sir. I suggest 4 names- H S Phoolka, Jarnail Singh, Bhagwant or Gurpreet. Speaker, date, time, place of ur choice”.

The gauntlet was picked up, but with a rider it seemed, which did not go down well with Singh, who asked why Kejriwal wouldn’t debate directly. The latter responded saying he would debate with Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi any time, but his Punjab team would take on Singh.

While all this was on, there were quite a few who were enjoying the exchange from the sidelines. One user commented: "Captain Amarinder Singh’s takedown of Arvind Kejriwal is the funniest thing I’ve read all day long”.

Though, initially, supporters from both teams took equal potshots at the politicians and the rivals, soon the hashtag #CaptainKnocksOutKejriwal started trending on Twitter. Sarcastic tweets and memes soon started doing the rounds:

Kejriwal soon noted the onslaught that was coming his way, what with both BJP and Congress supporters seemingly playing from the same side.
To this, Singh commented: "Morning you started with Majithia, now you’re bringing in BJP,next you’ll say Donald Trump is conspiring with me against you.”

Well, this Twitter debate seems far from over, but going by how this panned out, it wouldn’t be incorrect to say that people collectively seem to be rooting for an open debate. After all, isn’t that what politics is supposed to be?!

Haji Ali Dargah to give complete access to women

Haji Ali Dargah to give complete access to women

In a landmark decision, the Haji Ali Trust told the Supreme Court on Monday that it will grant women access into the sanctum sanctorum of the iconic dargah and asked for four weeks to implement the order.

A bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justices D Y Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao granted time to the trust and disposed off its appeal against the Bombay High Court order asking it to give equal access to women also.

The hearing however saw the court nudge the Trust on why it had separate entrances for men and women into the dargah.

"There may be women who do not want separate entrances. Why do you have to distinguish between man and woman here?” Chief Justice Thakur queried.

In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court had taken a serious view of the religious "exclusion and restrictions” women suffer. It had pointed to Kerala's Sabarimala temple and the Haji Ali dargah to note that 'exclusion' was practised by both Hindus and Muslims and the "problem needs to be addressed''.

"Exclusion is not there if nobody is allowed after a certain point. There is exclusion if women are not allowed after a certain point and men are," Chief Justice Thakur had defined the term.

On August 26, the Bombay High Court lifted a ban imposed on women from entering the inner sanctum of Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai. Noorjehan Fiaz and Zakia Soman, founders of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), had petitioned the Bombay High Court against the ban, calling it unconstitutional.

The 2011 ban violates the women’s right to freedom of religion enshrined in Article 25 of the constitution. The PIL stated that gender justice is inherent in the Quran and there is no prohibition on women visiting graves.

Varun Gandhi rebuts Defence leaks allegation, asserts did not attend defence deal meets

Varun Gandhi rebuts Defence leaks allegation, asserts did not attend defence deal meets

Sultanpur MP Varun Gandhi on Saturday came out with a two-page long response to the allegation about him leaking classified defence information to arms manufacturers, saying there is "not one grain of truth or shred of evidence” against him.

A former partner of arms dealer Abhishek Verma, in a letter to the Prime Minister, had alleged that Verma "honey trapped and compromised” Gandhi into leaking information about defence matters, and blackmailed him with photographs taken with "foreign escorts.”

The September 16 letter that C Edmonds Allen, a lawyer based in New York, wrote to PM Modi was released Thursday to the media by Swaraj Abhiyan leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav. Allen’s letter mentioned that Gandhi was "a Member of Parliament of the Defence Consultative Committee”.

In response, the BJP MP wrote a detailed, seven-point letter addressed to "fellow countrymen”, written in English, claiming that parliamentary records would show that he never attended any meeting of the defence consultative committee and very few of the standing committee.

"Clearly, I was neither actively seeking out or passing on any information. Had there been any hidden agenda or motivation as alleged in the letter, it would have been reflected in my attendance,” Gandhi said.

As a first time opposition MP, he claimed he could not, and did not, have any access to any sensitive defence information. "So the question of being allegedly coerced into revealing anything does not arise,” Gandhi said.

"I would like to point out the false and frivolous nature of its (letter) charges, and the impossibility of these allegations." Mr Gandhi said.

"I am taking a legal recourse against those who have deliberately sought to target my reputation and public standing.” Gandhi said.

Mr Allen, who was a partner of Mr Verma, fell out with him in 2012. Mr Verma is facing trial in the 2006 Naval War Room leak case.

"I have never met Edmonds Allen, who has written this letter containing these allegation. Nor do I have any details of who he is, not what he does except as has been reported in the press of him being a former associate of Abhishek Verma," Mr Gandhi said in the statement.

"I first made acquaintance with (Abhishek) Verma when I was a college student in England. He was introduced as the son of late Veena and Shrikant Verma, both Members of Parliament from a reputed family. We met socially over a short period of time. It has been many years since we last met. At no point did we ever discussed work, neither his nor mine," he said.

The BJP distanced itself from the issue and said that there was no point in commenting on it when the person in question had himself denied the charges.

Major setback to Kejriwal as HC dismisses plea to dismiss defamation case

Major setback to Kejriwal as HC dismisses plea to dismiss defamation case

In an another embarrassment to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal, a Delhi court on Wednesday rejected the plea to dismiss the defamation case filed against him and other party leaders by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

"No illegality or question of sustainability can be made out," the court said, pronouncing the Delhi Chief Minister's request "devoid of merit".

"The request of the petitioner to adjourn the court proceedings before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) is rejected, being devoid of merit and the same is culminated into dismissal of the present petition,” Justice P S Teji said.

Jaitley had filed a criminal defamation complaint alleging Kejriwal and five AAP leaders — Raghav Chadha, Kumar Vishwas, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Deepak Bajpai — had defamed him in the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) controversy. On April 7, the trial court had granted bail to Kejriwal and others after they had appeared before it.

On December 21, 2015 Jaitley had filed a complaint against Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and several other AAP leaders for allegedly trying to defame him in the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) scam. In his complaint, Jaitley had accused the AAP leaders of making 'false and defamatory' statements on him in the DDCA scam, thereby harming his reputation.

The finance minister had rejected the charge that he had syphoned off money from DDCA for his own benefit. The finance minister had said that the statements of the six AAP leaders against him and his family members lowered his dignity in the eyes of the public at large.

Jaitley had said Kejriwal's statement that he received money when the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium was constructed during his tenure as the DDCA chief, was false as the board of directors had constituted a committee to supervise the work and he was not a member of this supervisory committee.
