WAR ON TV - “Quit the profession, Dammit!”— Arnab Goswami tells Shekhar Gupta

A DIRTY intra-media war broke out on Indian news television as Republic TV's Arnab Goswami warned, dared and asked senior journalist Shekhar Gupta and a couple of other journalists to quit the profession and threatened to expose them over their alleged role in the coverage of the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal scam.

"If you think today that I will stop at anything, I won't...I will take down these dirty editors and their dirty reporters brick by brick. You may not name them, I will," Arnab Goswami told the nation, as he is fond of referring to his audience.

Shekhar Gupta, on the other hand, was quoted in The Indian Express as saying that "the rigorous and pathbreaking investigation into the deal" that he and his team did when he was at the helm of affairs at The Indian Express, "speaks for itself."

"(T)here was absolutely no question of any influence," Gupta told The Indian Express on Thursday. By late evening, Arnab Goswami was spitting fire, his natural mode of fulmination over issues of national interest.

He kept referring to "these dirty editors and their dirty reporters" but did not name Gupta, while making sure that no one is left in any doubt. Shekhar Gupta, a media entrepreneur, now heads The Print, and is a well known and widely highly regarded journalist with considerable presence in the electronic as well as print media.
Republic TV on Journalists

The full-frontal war of editors was triggered after the Enforcement Directorate’s latest chargesheet claimed that Christian Michel has "admitted hiring services of Guy Douglas to influence the media.” The chargesheet, sections of the media reported, mentioned the names of senior journalists Manu Pubby and Gupta. Both worked for The Indian Express at the time of reporting this scam.

Republic TV on Sonia Gandhi

The AgustaWestland deal was cancelled in 2014 after the scam hit headlines.

"I will not stop till our team of journalists will expose the dalals who constituted the dirty brigade of top editors and reporters of Lutyens Delhi," Goswami shouted at the top of his voice.

And then he refused to pause. Instead, he dared "that dirty editor and his dirty reporter, and that dirty editor who took money, the three of them, to own up before it is too late."

Republic TV on Pranab Mukherjee

It was very clear that Goswami, currently a darling of the regime, was levelling serious allegations of corruption against one of India's top journalists, but he was still not naming him, while all the time saying, "If you think that some subtle references will be made, I won't. I don't give a damn when it comes to things like this."

But then he shied away from taking names. Instead, he chose a different route, spewing and spouting long-winded malformed sentences that were peppered and punctuated throughout with the word 'print', or better still, 'PRINT'.

Republic TV on then PMO

Listen to Goswami working hard to somehow insert 'print' with every breath, and some more in between:

"Remember, you may PRINT anything, you may put anything to PRINT, you may choose not to put it to PRINT, it may not be in PRINT, but it will be in PRINT one day. The truth will be PRINTED, because it must be in PRINT, the truth must be IMPRINTED into our nation's memory, and those in PRINT must PRINT the UNPRINTABLE TRUTH because what is UNPRINTABLE must be PRINTED with EXPRESS vision and EXPRESS speed. If there is any COURAGE in those who talk about how EXPRESS they are with the news, I want it to be in the PRINT."

Republic TV on Journalists

There he was, the quintessential Arnab Goswami, never shy of a good fight, or a bad and dirty one, and he seemed ready to take upon not just Gupta but also the Indian Express.

"I am only giving them advance warning and I know, some of them will file caveats in the Delhi high court tomorrow -- Republic TV should not name us, save us!... The nation will get to know your names," he promised.

And then he directly addressed the journalists he was trying to put in the dock: "Did you meet Guy Douglas? Did you and your reporter meet Guy Douglas?"

Profile of Shekhar Gupta in Caravan

And soon, he laid out his own demand charter, telling these journalists who have built their reputations over years of work: "They should not open their mouths, they should seal their lips for the rest of their lives."

Described by the Caravan magazine once as "an omnipresent newspaperman in the age of celebrity television anchors," Gupta, "the son of a minor bureaucrat" turned "one of the best-connected, and richest, journalists in the country," accepted the Padma Bhushan award in 2009 and is known for his proximity to power.

Goswami seemed to have a particular issue with Shekhar's wealth. "These people who build farm houses and make enormous amounts of money, want to lecture us? They should leave the profession," he said, before deciding to make it rather more succinct: "Quit the profession, Dammit!"

Shekhar Gupta on Rafale scam

Shekhar had earlier been dismissive of another scam, the Rafale scam. He wrote: "Rafale deal is no scam. It’s just a glaring example of the BJP government’s pusillanimous, unimaginative ... handling of defence purchases."

He, in fact, claimed that "any major defence deal" in India "is bound to be called a scam" and if "there's a humongous scam in the Rafale deal, it is called stupidity."

The media world, or as Goswami refers to it 178 times every evening, the Lutyens' India, is now waiting to see what IMPRINT has it left on the senior journalist. As for Republic TV, Goswami seemed sure of just one fact: that people do not go to Claridges hotel to have a milk shake with a man called Guy Douglas.
