Rahul Gandhi fasts, but brings along friends who spell trouble for Amarinder Singh

RAHUL GANDHI FASTED, and landed Amarinder Singh in hot waters.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who was once seen virtually hailing the clean chit by CBI to Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar and then had to clarify his stand after Sikhs' protests forced the party high command to drop the duo as its Lok Sabha candidates, may now find himself in a new trouble, none of which is of his own making.

In fact, it is the Congress president Rahul Gandhi who has landed Amarinder Singh in an unenviable situation.

Clearly oblivious to the impact his actions might have for the Congress government in Punjab, Rahul Gandhi decided to allow the 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler to be among the party leaders who trooped inside the Rajghat for his much hyped symbolic fast.

But when the duo was kept away from the main dais, the BJP was quick to paint it as its "admission of guilt.”

Political experts said Rahul Gandhi was well aware of the luggage the party carries, but the two leaders are seen powerful in the Delhi circles.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said Rahul Gandhi was ostensibly fasting against alleged caste violence and communalism but chose to bring along Kumar and Tytler for an "alleged fast" at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial.

Tytler and Kumar have long faced accusations of having incited mobs to attack Sikhs during the riots in the aftermath of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984. Congress had nominated them from two of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, but had to drop them following protests.

Amarinder Singh had said at the time that the Congress had responded to the issue keeping in mind the sensitivity of the minority Sikh community.

Reacting to the presence of Tytler and Kumar at Rahul Gandhi's fast, Akali Dal leader Manjit Singh GK said on Monday, April 9, that both the riots-accused must be thrown out of the Congress party and the Gandhis must apologise. He said it was a travesty that they made former PM Manmohan Singh to apologise even though he did not figure in the scheme of things in 1984.

When the duo was dropped as Congress candidates, Amarinder had said that the "Congress responded to the sensitivity of the issue that involved the Sikh community."

The Akali Dal can make the ground beneath Amarinder Singh's feet too hot if it chose to ask Amarinder Singh to take a stance on whether Tytler and Kumar should have been anywhere near Rahul Gandhi's fast.
