Five people beaten up on suspicion of carrying beef, Cops book the victims

IN YET ANOTHER incident of cow vigilantism, a mob of around a hundred people has allegedly beaten up five persons, including an auto-rickshaw driver, near Gosi village in Haryana's Faridabad on suspicion of carrying beef.

According to the police, the mob surrounded and beat up auto-rickshaw driver and four persons suspecting them of carrying beef on Friday morning. The attackers recorded the entire incident on a mobile phone.

The culprits also told the driver to chant 'Bharat mata ki jai' and 'Jai Hanuman'. When the driver refused, he was brutally thrashed.

What is worse is that the Haryana Police, instead of holding the culprits accountable, has booked the victims for allegedly carrying beef.

In fact, the victims have claimed that they were beaten up in front of some policemen. On the other hand, the Haryana Police seems to be more interested in finding out whether the meat being carried inside the auto-rickshaw was beef or not.

A case has been registered against the victims on suspicion of carrying beef and the meat samples have been sent for forensic examination. "Since slaughtering of cow is an offence in Haryana, a case has been registered against the five men. The results of the meat sample are awaited,” said Faridabad Police spokesperson.

Speaking to CNN-News18, Raman Malik, a member of the ruling BJP in Haryana, said, "The police will do due diligence before filing the FIR. If any persons is caught carrying beef, then it is a case for the police.”

A senior police officer of the district said a case would be registered on the complaint of the victims too.

Hitting out at the Manohar Lal Khattar government in the state, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said the BJP had failed to maintain law and order in Haryana.

The assault comes just a month after the Supreme Court delivered a strong message on cow vigilantism and told states to crack down to curb the increasing instances of cow vigilantism.

A few days back, RSS Mohan Bhagwat had stressed on a distinction between "pious" gau rakshaks, or cow protectors and criminals.

"People who are criminal and involved in violent activities should be bothered about that (remarks from Supreme Court and PM Modi)," Mr Bhagwat had said in his speech on the Sangh's foundation day.
