Intellectuals, activists stage protest in support of Rohngiyas

Chandigarh: Leading intellectuals, doctors, lawyers, activists in Chandigarh staged a strong, vociferous protest in Saturday evening in Chandigarh's Sector 17 Plaza in support of Rohngiya Muslims. Protesters demanded that India must immediately grant refugee status to Rohingyas and adopt a compassionate, humanitarian policy on this issue.

Among those who led the protest were academician turned politician Prof Manjit Singh, leading litterateur Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, Dr Pyare Lal Garg, lawyer Loveneet Thakur,  Microbiologist Dr Jagdish Kumar and many others.

Earlier this week, the Indian government told the Supreme Court that about 40,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees in the country were a threat to national security and they would be deported. India's stance has surprised many refugees who were pinning hopes on New Delhi's support.
