Another self-styled Godman arrested on rape charges

POLICE IN RAJASTHAN’s Alwar arrested on Saturday Falahari Maharaj, a self-styled godman who is accused of raping a 21-year-old law student.

Famous among his devotees as Falahari Baba for his reported fruits-only diet, the 70-year-old spiritual leader had allegedly raped the woman at his ashram on August 7.

The woman, whose parents have been followers of Falahari Baba for years, has alleged that she was assaulted at his lavish ashram in Rajasthan's Alwar on August 7. She was allegedly told that the Baba couldn't meet anyone during an "eclipse" and asked to stay the night. The woman has told the police that the Baba called her at night to his room and assaulted her.

The woman, a law intern, had visited the ashram to donate some money. It was apparently on the baba's recommendation that she secured an internship under a senior lawyer in Delhi, for which she received a stipend of Rs. 3,000.

"Her family told her to give it to the Baba. When she went to meet him he told her to wait and then raped and threatened her. The parents came to us after the woman told them everything and we registered a case," said Archana Jha, a police officer in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur.

It was Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's conviction in rape case that gave the woman courage to report about the matter.

She broke her silence after the Ram Rahim verdict and based on her complaint the Bilaspur police registered a case on September 11.

The godman commands a strong following across northern India and the delay in his arrest sparked speculation that police might be holding back due to political pressure.

The father of the woman had said on Friday that more such cases would come up as the investigation progressed.

"There are more such cases which will come up now. There are devotees associated with the godman who couldn’t come forward earlier because of fear, they will come up… Soon, the reality of the man will be revealed,” he said.

Police said the self-styled godman, who also has an ashram in Bilaspur, allegedly threatened the woman to not disclose the incident to anyone, citing his influence.

After the complaint, the Baba got himself admitted to an Alwar hospital for 'high blood pressure', an NDTV report said.

All vitals were found normal and the police arrested Falahari Baba on Saturday.

The 'Godman' has devotees in India as well as abroad, the police say.
