A four-storied building located in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area collapsed this morning, killing at least eight people. According to reports, the incident took place at around 10.40am at Damodar Park on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg. The building housed a nursing home on the ground floor and people were residing on first floor and above.
Eight others - including four males and and four women - were injured while 16 people were rescued, including 10 women.
Fourteen fire tenders and two rescue vans have been rushed to the spot and rescue operations are underway at the site of the ground plus four-storeyed building ‘Saidarshan’, Chief Fire Officer P Rahangdale said.
"The entire ground and four floored residential building collapsed. About 30 persons are suspected to be trapped. Until now 16 persons (have been) rescued and sent to hospital," Rahangdale further said.
BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta has ordered an inquiry into the collapse. The inquiry committee has been asked to submit the report in the next 15 days.
Fire brigade and NDR personnel are at the spot trying to rescue those trapped. It is learned that there was a maternity home on the ground floor of the building which was undergoing repairs.
The property reportedly belongs to a Shiv Sena leader S Shitap. BMC Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar ordered an inquiry into the incident. "Five people have died, 8 seriously injured. Don’t know about Sunil Shitap, have ordered an inquiry,” news agency ANI quoted Mahadeshwar as saying.
Congress leader Pravin Chheda claimed that Shitap was running a guest house on the ground floor of the building. "Property belongs to Sena’s S Shitap, he was running hospital on ground floor and was now going to run guest house. The onus lies on him,” Chheda was quoted by ANI.
The search for trapped persons inside the debris using search camera is on. More details are awaited.
