A 30-year-old man died and ten others suffered injuries when a Porsche car hit the median on the Dr Radhakrishnan Salai in Chennai and ploughed through autorickshaws parked on the roadside in the early hours of Monday.
Police said Vikas Anand (22), a car racer and a resident of T Nagar, and his friend Charan Kumar were returning home after attending a party thrown by Tuti Patriot, who won the Tamil Nadu Premier League final held at Chepauk on Sunday night.
The two managed to escape the crash unharmed as the airbags deployed. They have since been arrested.
One driver, 29-year-old G Arumugam, was killed on the spot. His seven-year-old daughter has been orphaned as she lost her mother recently. "Tough action should be taken against rich people who drink and drive. My brother lost his wife and child recently...now his other child is an orphan," said G Vinayagam, Arumugam's brother.
Some of the autos were almost reduced to a crumpled heap with the impact.
After hitting the curb, the car smashed into several parked autos, injuring their drivers, who were sleeping on the road.
Auto drivers Arumugam and Varadhan suffered serious injuries, and were transferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, while the rest were sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital. Arumugam succumbed to his injuries.
The Adyar traffic police have registered a case, and investigations are underway.
In another drink driving incident in July this year, a woman driver of an Audi car killed a 45-year-old man while speeding on the OMR in Chennai.
