Several politicians, including Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal appeared to doze off as Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his Independence Day speech in Delhi on Monday. Modi spoke for 94 minutes flat, addressing issues of national concern and sending out a strong message to Pakistan on the ongoing Kashmir crisis.
The PM's speech was the longest Independence Day speech in history. PM Modi broke his own record from last year, when he made a speech that in turn reportedly broke a record held by the first Indian PM, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi's address was chock-a-block with statistics, lists of achievements, a clarion call to eliminate discrimination and a strong message to Pakistan.
After social media helpfully pointed out that Mr Kejriwal had been caught napping, Manish Sisodia, Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, suggested the reaction couldn't be helped. "The speech was boring," he said. To prove that was not a partisan review, he pointed to images of senior ministers Arun Jaitley and Manohar Parrikar who were also snoozing.
When the photo started being shared on social media, AAP leader and former journalist Ashutosh took to twitter to say: "Why media is so biased? Only targets AAP/Kejriwal? Jaitley/Parrikar sleeping, media not showing ? Why ? Why?”
Now, more astute tweeple took this as an admission that the CM was ‘moditating’, sorry meditating, but just getting a power nap. One Twitter member shared Ashutosh’s tweet, with the comment: "Kejriwal was sleeping confirmed by @ashutosh83B”.
