Angry locals beat up five policemen at a police post in Uttar Pradesh, after the police allegedly beat up two men who had refused to pay them a bribe, then pushed them into a pond and watched them drown. A case of murder has been filed.
The postmortem report of the two labourers revealed that the two men were beaten to death.
The earlier reports suggested that the labourers jumped into a pond to escape from the policemen, who were demanding a bribe and threatening to file a false case.
The complaint was lodged by a relative of one of the two men. He claimed that four labourers, including the deceased, were travelling in a truck loaded with bricks when it was stopped at a check post near Kosma crossing at around 4.30 am on Friday.
The police demanded a bribe of Rs 100 but, the driver of the truck refused to comply. The two labourers along with the driver fled from the scene. Dileep and Pankaj were however, caught by the police and were beaten to death.
Their bodies were discovered dumped in a river, possibly in order to make it look like a case of drowning. The complaint against the cops was lodged with Ghiror Police.
The authorities have registered a case of murder against the police post in-charge, two constables and two home guards after the postmortem report.
They have been charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy), Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan Verma said.
The deaths sparked tensions in Kosma village in UP’s Mainpuri district on Friday as a mob attacked the local police station, beating up personnel and dragging them on the road.
The incident comes months ahead of crucial assembly elections in the state and is expected to add to the woes of the ruling Samajwadi Party that is battling charges of shoddy law and order.
