Flood fury in Assam: 26 dead, 36 lakh people affected

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonwal and Union Minister Jitendra Singh conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit areas in Assam on Saturday.

Twenty six people have lost their lives and nearly 36 lakh have been affected due to floods across more than 3,300 villages in 28 districts in the state.

The floods in Assam have been triggered by heavy rainfall and swelling of rivers caused due to incessant rains in upper catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan.

The worst affected districts are Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon and Sonitpur, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Although rainfall had decreased as of Saturday, officials in Assam, added water levels across rivers were still overflowing. "Overflowing rivers are flooding new areas, making things worse," said Keshab Mahanta, Assam's water resource minister.

Addressing a press conference after the survey, the minister announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the victims of the flood. "The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for victims of the flood," he said. Rajnath took stock of Kaziranga, Nagaon and Morigaon, some of the worst-affected areas in Assam.

Describing the situation in the state as 'grim', he also appealed country's NGOs to come forward and help the victims.

Applauding the efforts of Sonowal government in Assam, Rajnath said, "It is heartwarming to see the government and other political representatives helping the rescue and relief operations in Assam. The CM and his team are doing well in managing the situation."

Authorities in Assam have opened more than 800 temporary shelters and food and medicines distribution center's across the state, a senior official at the state disaster management authority said. The NDRF, SDRF and the army are helping the district administration in evacuating the affected population to safe places.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams with deep divers have also been attached to the 27 Fire Stations of the State.

Flooding is an annual problem in Assam state.
