Whose statue did they vandalise; who was he?

Swarajbir, Punjabi’s foremost playwrights today, a poet of sterling quality and someone whose editorial quill has shaken the world of Punjabi journalism out of its slumber, has written in the newspaper’s May 16, 2019 edition about the sad and hugely disturbing episode in Calcutta wherein the bust of polymath Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was smashed by hooligans as part of a political project whose short term objective is to impact votes and long term aim is to effect a cultural change.

We bring to the readers of Punjab Today the English translation of Swarajbir’s piece. This English translation is at the Punjab Today’s own initiative and the author is not responsible for any unintended deviation from the original. Feedback is welcome. — Editor, Punjab Today

Whose statue did they vandalise; who was he?

SWARAJBIR

THIS IS THE Bengal of the 19th century. Not today's West Bengal, but Bengal. The larger common Bengal, that today's Bangladesh is also a part of.

A storm of new ideas is brewing up in that Bengal. Bengalis, inspired by the modernity coming from the West, are getting ready for a battle against orthodoxy and conservative thinking.

A battle of ideas is in the air. At times it seems these young people will forever uproot the old thinking that time and modernity has rendered obsolete.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy

The caravan is led by Ram Mohan Rai.

Conversant with Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, English, French and a few more languages, he is raising his voice to advocate a new kind of education. The polymath is raising awareness about women's rights and slamming the practice of sati and polygamy. He is preaching about One Supreme God and lays the foundation of Brahmo Samaj.

Henry Vivian Derozio

There is also Henry Vivian Derozio whose revolutionary poetry is adding to the fervour of the times.

There is also Debendranath Tagore, the father of Rabindranath Tagore, laying the foundation of the Tattwabodhini Sabha. Also active in those times is Keshub Chandra Sen.

But then there is also another huge looming persona of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the principal of the Sanskrit College whose intellectual ability and sterling character are only too well known all around. He is an unflinching man with guts.
He lives what he preaches.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

A major scholar, he has found new path-breaking ways of teaching Sanskrit, has rationalized and simplified the Bengali alphabet and typography, given a new direction to Bangla prose, wrote a new book to help learn Bangla (Borno Porichoy, 1854) and opened the doors of the Sanskrit College to non-Brahmans.

He doesn’t merely advocate the need to impart education to women; he has actually opened 35 schools for girl students, funding them from his own pocket. He opposes child marriage and polygamy. He is putting in massive efforts in the fight for widows' right to remarry.

This is how historian Bipin Chandra records the words of a primary witness (Pandit Shivanath Shastri) who had witnessed the marriage of a widow in Calcutta on December 7, 1956, the first such in India to take place legally:

Excerpt from G L Chandavarkar's book Builders of Modern India - Dondo Keshav Karve p.136 containing the description of the first widow remarriage of 1956.

"I shall never forget the day. When Pandit Vidyasagra came with his friend, the bridegroom, at the head of a large procession. The crowd of spectators was so great that there was not an inch of moving space, and many fell into the big drains which were to be seen by the sides of Calcutta streets in those days. After the ceremony, it became the subject of discussion everywhere, in the bazaars and in the shops, in the streets, in the public squares, in students' lodging houses, in gentleman's drawing rooms, in offices and in distant village homes where even women earnestly discussed it among themselves. The weavers of Santipore issued a peculiar kind of women's sari which contained, woven along its borders, the first line of a newly composed song which went on to say, 'May Vidyasagar Live Long.'”

Thanks to Vidyasagar's efforts, 25 widows remarried between 1855 and 1860. In 1856, Hindu widows won the legal right to remarry in the form of the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856. Vidyasagar and his friends played a huge role in seeing this legislation through.

To quote historian Bipan Chander, Vidyasagar, by raising his voice for the widows' right to remarry, fell foul of the orthodox Hindus and repeatedly received death threats. Somehow, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar survived those dangerous times, but on May 14, 2019, his bust in Kolkata was not so fortunate.

Bharti Janata Party president Amit Shah's roadshow in Kolkata was scheduled for May 14. Activists of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress clashed at various places and the brawl spilled over to the Vidyasagar College located on the College Street. Reports said the BJP supporters entered the college and smashed the bust of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

Mamata with smashed bust

All this fracas happened just an hour before the arrival of Amit Shah. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Bannerjee turned this into a highly emotive issue, gathered the shards from the vandalised bust in her lap and made a highly emotionally surcharged statement.

It has been alleged that some among the vandals were raising slogans - 'Vidyasagar finished, how'z the Josh?' (The reference is to a dialogue from the movie Uri, often quoted by the prime minister.)

From The Telegraph, May 15, 2019

A Kolkata-based newspaper has termed the episode as a clash between two cultures. As per this newspaper, there is enough room in the Bengali culture for different ideas, traditions and sects but the BJP supporters only believe in thrusting their own ideology down everyone's throat.

(The unforeseen intervention pits two images against each other: one that projects Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his lieutenants as "chowkidars” and the other standing up to protect the legacy of Vidyasagar who had played a pioneering role in reforming Hinduism. - The Telegraph, May 15, 2019; "Clash of cultures: Shocked Bengal witnesses vandalism of Vidyasagar bust" by Meghdeep Bhattacharyya. This quote is not in the original piece by Swarajbir. — Ed.)

The BJP has refuted these reports, claiming that the bust was smashed instead by the workers of the TMC. The question is not about who really did smash the bust, the BJP's workers or the TMC's. The question is whether those who were doing so really knew what they were doing, whose bust were they smashing?

We can see in what intolerant times we have landed. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's name is taken with much pride and respect in the context of 19th century Bengal Renaissance. His work in the field of women's emancipation was revolutionary at its core.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was not just an armchair intellectual whose contribution are normally limited to writing essays and books; he was someone who actually ventured into the rough and tumble of society and tried to fight to turn his ideas into reality. He faced sharp and toxic opposition, the lot of anyone who takes a plunge to grapple with the reality of the times.

Vidyasagar college

Instead of becoming a preacher sermonising from his perch in the drawing room, he preferred to take the risk and get his hands dirty in the streets and bazaars of his land.

He spent his last days living among the Santhal tribe. He was someone whom Antonio Gramsci describes as an Organic Intellectual. If we do not respect our elders such as this man, then it could only mean that we have now become people oozing with deeply held hatred. We are powerless before this hatred. Hate and intolerance have no more left us humane. We perhaps do not know which direction we are headed for.

Why is this hatred being spread? Is the time to settle differences through goshthi, through the great Indian argumentative tradition, over in our country? Why is an effort afoot to claim and capture our mindspace by turning hate into a weapon?

Hatred for minorities, hatred for neighbouring countries, constantly flinging accusations against opponents, character assassination — all these are becoming the hallmarks of our thought process. We need to pause and think: why is this happening?

BHARAT MATA NEEDS A GOOD CLERK
Surgical Strikes: Modi attack on Congress destroyed Vajpayee's legacy of surgical strikes, hurts army veterans who were part of such actions

Surgical Strikes: Modi attack on Congress destroyed Vajpayee's legacy of surgical strikes, hurts army veterans who were part of such actions

Arun Shourie claims "personal knowledge” of surgical strike 14 kms inside Pak

1971 Surgical Strike Major General Says – "Bakwaas Band Honi Chahiye Iss Desh Mein” (See Video)

PT Bureau

NEW DELHI: In their bid to falsify the claims of Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have finally conducted a surgical strike on the legacy of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the history of transborder overt and covert operations carried out by the brave officers and jawans of the Indian armed forces, dragging the uniform into the cesspool of dirty political slugfests.

Officers and jawans associated with the surgical strikes in the past, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speeches and the Defence Ministry in its RTI reply have actually said never happened, must be wondering if the country will now ever acknowledge their contribution.

A highly angry Major General A J B Jaini (Retd) seethed with rage on national television after he was told about claims that no surgical strike ever happened before the Modi regime. "I have personally been part of two surgical strikes. First was on December 7-8, 1971, at least 7 to 8 kilometres inside Pakistan in the Poonch sector where an Ordinance Dump was located,” he said, and boiled over with anger.

"Zoom karo…zoom karo,” he shouted, asking the television crew to zoom in on his phone on which was the picture of one Major Khan. "Yeh hai Major Khan, mera Company Commander…zoom karo…jin ko Vir Chakra mila tha…14 Grenadier…Baat karte hain, pehle nahi huya tha, pehle nahi huya tha.”

"Bakwaas band honi chahiye iss desh mein,” he cried at the top of his voice, and then narrated another surgical strike when he was DGS Operations in Nagaland, fighting the NSCN’s infamous 6th Gang.

"I was the planner, coordinator. I did surgical strikes because they would enter from a neighbouring country…Kya mein jhooth bol raha hun?”

When the Prime Minister of a country has to comb through files and rummage in drawers and storage rooms to find if India conducted a surgical strike against Pakistan in the past, it merely underlines that we need a more efficient clerk who is conversant with record-keeping.
-----------
Next time, before planning a surgical strike, India needs to recruit a better clerk who can keep all the records methodically and furnish more truthful and credible RTI replies.
-----------
The leaders of a responsible nuclear power, whether incumbent or those who called the shots during yesteryears, squabbling over facts like conducting surgical strikes against another nuclear power is no more mere hilarious or ridiculous. It is stupidity. That it hurts those who put their lives on the line, or made the supreme sacrifice, is all the more painful.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now said the army chiefs in charge at the time have said they do not have any information on such strikes.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had claimed the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had indeed carried out surgical strikes. Manmohan Singh does not have much of a record of being a habitual liar.

Modi has been claiming credit for a surgical strike across the Line of Control after the Uri terror attack in 2016, and an air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) training camp at Balakot in Pakistan after the Pulwama attack in which 42 CRPF jawans died.

Lt General (retd) DS Hooda, who was the mastermind behind the Modi-era surgical strike, has said the Indian army had indeed conducted similar surgical strikes against terrorists across the LoC during the UPA rule too. He also advised against politicising military operations, saying it will cause "long-term damage" to the armed forces.

Congress has claimed that at least six cross-border strikes were conducted between 2004 and 2014.

The BJP claims that September 29, 2016, was the first time a surgical strike ever happened.

Now the Director General, Military Operations, has jumped into the arena, claiming in an RTI response that there is no record of any surgical strikes before the September 29, 2016 one.

With the latest stance, the Modi regime has now negated the claims of the earlier NDA also that any surgical strikes were carried out when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was at the helm.

Interestingly, former Union Minister Arun Shourie, who was a member of the Vajpayee cabinet, has claimed "personal knowledge" that the Indian army conducted a surgical strike 14 kilometres inside Pakistan during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime.

He said the Indian Army jawans killed 10-15 persons and even brought seven bodies from across the border into India.

"But we kept quiet and it has never been talked about," Shourie told Shekhar Gupta during an interview under Gupta's "Off the Cuff" programme, telecast by NDTV.

Castigating the government for the hype created around surgical strike against Pakistan, Arun Shourie, narrated the incident that ostensibly happened during the Vajpayee years but did not say where exactly had the strike happened.

"I am telling you this from absolutely personal knowledge. I can't reveal his (the person who planned the strike) name...they (the Pakistanis) had done something evil (and) to teach them a lesson, a raid was planned 14 km inside Pakistan. They killed everybody there (at the forward post of Pakistan), probably about 10-15 persons and lugged seven bodies back across the border into India," Shourie said.

If PM Modi has indeed checked all the records of the past surgical strikes, then it is not clear if he deliberately chose not to mention this particular strike or if it actually did not figure in the records.

Former Defence Minister P Chidambaram also said the UPA government had decided not to make public the fact of cross-border raids.

Arun Shourie even said the Indian army jawans brought with them "as a trophy" the guest book of the forward post of Pakistan that they destroyed.

"It so happened that (Pakistan President Pervez) Musharraff had visited the forward post 10 days before this raid and had written in the guest book –
"What a good job you people are doing, keep it up". The guest book is now lying at one of the regimental headquarters," Shourie said.

Shourie also advised the powers that be to focus on capacity building and carry out the urgent steps as per the recommendations of the Naresh Chandra committee report instead of indulging in hyper talk.

With the latest revelations of the Defence Ministry claiming in an RTI reply that there are no records of any surgical strikes conducted prior to the 2016 surgical strikes, the actions undertaken by the Vajpayee government, as claimed by Shourie, have also come under doubt.

In its reply, the Defence Ministry, through Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), has said it only has data about a single strike conducted by the Army along the LoC on September 29, 2016.

Next time, before planning a surgical strike, India needs to recruit a better clerk who can keep all the records methodically and furnish more truthful and credible RTI replies. Who knows the country might find no record if it really vivisected Pakistan into two in 1971?

In the end, it all depends on the clerk.

POLITICAL BOMBSHELL ABOUT 'NON-POLITICAL' INTERVIEW
NDTV’s Ravish Kumar claims Akshay’s interview of Modi was paid news, Zee News & ANI played dirty role
02.05.19 -
NDTV’s Ravish Kumar claims Akshay’s interview of Modi was paid news, Zee News & ANI played dirty role

Journalist Ravish Kumar of NDTV, who is not only widely respected but enjoys an almost cult status, has written this article about the role played by ZEE News and ANI in the Akshay Kumar-Modi starrer "non-political interview” that went much beyond the chit chat about whether the prime minister likes mangoes or not. The interview, hailed by many as a PR master stroke, tried to temper the persona of a Modi flinging around careless references to India’s nuclear bomb by presenting the cuddly teddy bear persona inside the tough-talker airstrike warrior.

Is Akshay Kumar’s interview of Prime Minister Modi not paid news?

If you are familiar with the evolution of media, then you should sit up and take notice. If you are a die-hard supporter of the prime minister, then you should be even more aware and alert.

BY RAVISH KUMAR

AKSHAY KUMAR INTERVIEWD Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but who provided the camera for this interview? Who extended the required technical backup? Did you see any credit roll of the production company at the end of the interview? No one is raising these questions. It is clear that if these questions are raised in the public domain, then it will raise issues of accountability. The fact is that in the name of a non-political approach, massive politics has been played with the faith of the viewers.

The Quint website, quoting its sources, has claimed that it was the Zee News’ editorial team that was responsible for doing the prepping up work for the Akshay-Modi interview. It was video-graphed by the Zee News team and the post-production work, including editing, was done by the Zee News personnel.

When it was ready, news agency ANI put it out and all the television channels aired it. The Quint story does not have the version of the Zee News or the ANI.

This is unambiguously political propaganda. Content prepared by Zee News was released through the ANI and it was telecast by all channels. Should all these channels not have been informed as to how the content was created? Was it the ANI’s content that was being put in the public domain?

If you know how the media has been evolving in India, then this should make you sit up and take note. If you are a die-hard fan of the prime minister, then it is all the more important that you wake up to this fact. Do you support Modi so that the media can fool you? You support, that’s understandable. Why is the media playing these games?

There is a well-endowed team of Doordarshan in our country. Why did they not shoot or edit the interview? Does the prime minister not trust government institutions? Incidentally, as a professional, I’d like to state it that Akshay Kumar’s version of Bal Narendra video was very poorly shot. The prime minister was made to sit in such a fashion that you could even see the reflections of the technical staff in the glass pane behind him. During the course of this programme, one or the other person’s head or hand kept popping up on the screen. I’m sure the Doordarshan’s cameramen would have done a much better job.

But no one is raising these questions. The opposition simply does not have the moral strength for it. It has been found to be a bunch of cowards and absent from their job. (कोई पूछने वाला नहीं है. विपक्ष में नैतिक बल नहीं है. डरपोक और कामचोर विपक्ष है. इस इंटरव्यू से संबंधित मूल सवाल उठने चाहिए थे.) They should have raised fundamental questions in the context of this interview.
-----------

Disclaimer — Punjab Today brings you this English translation of Ravish Kumar’s piece that originally appeared in Hindi on the NDTV’s website. The original piece carried a disclaimer to the effect that the article contained the personal views of the author Ravish Kumar and that the NDTV was in no way responsible for the vailidity of any of its contents. We must hereby add that this translation has been done by Team Punjab Today solely at its own initiative and neither the author nor NDTV is responsible for any deviation from the original. We believe that the readers of Punjab Today stand to gain in translation. Readers have nothing to lose but their prejudices. – Ed.

-----------
Did the Zee News team really shoot this interview and also did the editing job? If so, it was a programme of the Zee News. Then why was this not made clear. Were all the channels kept in dark and forced to air Zee News’ programme? Will Zee News supply content to all television news channels in future also?

Does this interview not fall in the ambit of paid news? Zee News has a smorgasbord of businesses. Why will it create content for all channels pro bono? Will it get the rewards after the election?

If Akshay Kumar had brought his own team then that was understandable. The Quint website has a picture of the team of Zee News. The programme was planned in cahoots with a private television channel and a news agency was used to release it to all channels. In my view, this is a crime. This is an immoral act, falls short of any ethical standard. (नैतिक अपराध है.)

The prime minister of India should now inform the nation who did this interview. Zee News or ANI? Did all the channels ask ANI as to who had shot this interview? Will Zee News now do propaganda shoots, edit these and distribute such content to other channels, and those channels will air it? Are those working with these channels really such simpleton folks that they do not understand any of this?

The Election Commission is not working as an independent and fearless moderator. To have any hope of this institution is now pointless, otherwise this is a clear case of paid news. The Press Council of India and the forum of editors are all silent. At best, they merely decry such practices.  There is this News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) and you can choose to complain to them, but nothing will come out of that, too.

The ANI is a major Indian news agency and has collaboration pact with Thompson Reuters. Sometime back, some Army veterans who had retired from a number of different branches in the armed forces, wrote to Reuters. They informed it how their Indian associate ANI tried to run them down and make suspect their intentions when all they did was to raise their voice against politicisation of the Indian Army. These veterans wrote that they believe that the ANI has tried to misrepresent their view at the instance of India’s ruling party. The ANI has termed this claim baseless.

On April 12, more than 150 army officers wrote a missive to the President of India, wherein they had pointed out to this politicisation of the Indian Army. That day, the ANI had claimed that two of the signatories, former Army chief General (retd) SF Rodrigues and former Chief of Air Staff NC Suri had refuted that they had signed the representation, and that they have claimed that they had not given their consent in any way, shape or form. This news was published all around and was telecast widely.

Thompson was asked how it will carry out any assessment of the editorial ethical standards of its Indian associate. You can read about it in detail on Scroll.

You should not disregard the goings-on in the media merely because you are a BJP supporter or opponent. The media is not only helping Modi win this election but is also ensuring your defeat after the electoral exercise is over. Make that distinction between the role of the media and your own political support. What is being ruined right before your eyes, have one last look at that idyllic place, my friends. It is not such a difficult question that you cannot ask it. Your innate fear in raising this question is the final defeat of the people of India.

Centre's Notice To Congress President Rahul Gandhi Over Complaint About Foreign Citizenship
29.04.19 - Team PT
Centre's Notice To Congress President Rahul Gandhi Over Complaint About Foreign Citizenship

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi over complaints regarding his citizenship. Rahul Gandhi has been given a fortnight by the Home Ministry to explain his "factual position" over a complaint about his citizenship. The notice was issued based on a complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who has claimed that Gandhi has British citizenship.

Swamy, in his complaint, claimed that Gandhi was listed as one of the directors of a company registered in the United Kindgom. He alleged that Gandhi had declared his nationality as "British” in the company’s annual returns filed in 2005 and 2006.

The home ministry notice comes bang in the middle of the seven-phase national election, in which Rahul Gandhi is contesting from the constituencies of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala.

Similar objections were raised earlier this month by Dhruv Lal, an independent candidate contesting from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. However, Returning Officer (RO) of Amethi Ram Manohar Misra declared that the Congress president’s nomination papers were valid. Lal submitted unverified copies alleging that Gandhi’s nomination contained several discrepancies including details about his citizenship and educational qualifications.

"I am directed to say that this ministry has received a representation from Dr Subramanian Swamy, in which it has been brought out that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that you were one of the directors and secretary of the said company," says the letter from BC Joshi, Director, Citizenship, in the home ministry.

The letter also says: "It has been further brought out in the complaint that in the company's annual returns filed on October 10, 2005 and 31 October, 2006, your date of birth has been given as June 19, 1970 and that you had declared your nationality as British."

It says the dissolution application of the company, dated February 17, 2009, also referred to Rahul Gandhi's nationality as British.

"You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of the communication," the home ministry says.

Subramanian Swamy, a fierce critic of the Gandhis, raised the allegation first in 2015 and has repeated it several times since.

In 2016, Rahul Gandhi had accused the BJP leader of misleading the nation and had challenged him to substantiate his claims with documentary proof.

Congress leader Sanjay Jha, reacting to the notice, said: "This Is a manifestation of Modi and Amit Shah in panic mode."

Sunny Deol is just a Filmy one, while I am the real Fauji: Capt Amarinder

Sunny Deol is just a Filmy one, while I am the real Fauji: Capt Amarinder

Gurdaspur, April 26: Dismissing the possibility of any threat to Sunil Jakhar from the BJP candidate in the fray in Gurdaspur, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday said Sunny Deol was just a ‘filmy fauji’ with no ground support in the constituency.

Talking to mediapersons here after accompanying Jakhar for filing his nomination papers as the Congress candidate from Gurdaspur, Captain Amarinder quipped, in response to a question, "He (Sunny Deol) is a filmy fauji, while I am a real fauji.” We will defeat him, he is no threat to Sunil or the Congress, he declared.

Describing Sunny Deol as an ageing actor whose acting career was over, Captain Amarinder said "he (Sunny) will come and go.” Sunny might have played 23 Punjab’s Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri in Border but that does not make him a real fauji, said the Chief Minister.

When a journalist pointed out that Sunny Deol’s latest movie ‘Blank’ was set for release, Captain Amarinder further retorted: "He will draw a blank (in the elections).”

Expressing confidence that the Congress will win all the 13 seats in the state including Gurdaspur, the Chief Minister reiterated that he will go all out to ensure the complete route of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and his wife Harsimrat Badal in these Lok Sabha elections.

Captain Amarinder said he had gone through Punjab and the mood across the state was upbeat, and totally in favour of the Congress. There was absolutely no competition to the party, he asserted, in response to a question.

Asked to clarify on the Congress high command’s decision to pin responsibility on ministers and MLAs for the electoral performance of the party candidates in these elections, the Chief Minister said it had been decided to hold ministers and MLAs responsible for victory or defeat of Congress candidates in their respective constituencies. If a minister is unable to ensure victory, he will be dropped, and MLAs who fail to deliver will not get the ticket next time, he explained, underscoring the new performance-led culture in the party.
