Capt Amarinder raises Punjab farmers’ plight, debt burden with PM
Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday raised the issue of the economic plight of the debt-ridden farmers of Punjab at a meeting with PM Narendra Modi. Amarinder, who was part of the Congress delegation led by party national vice president Rahul Gandhi, said farmers, burdened with loans, were committing suicide in Punjab and other parts of the country. Talking to mediapersons after the meeting at Parliament House, Captain Amarinder said the problems of the farmers were being compounded by the manner in which agricultural issues, including MSP, were being handled by the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Captain said the Congress had sought the prime minister’s support to alleviate the debt and other woes of the farmers. The Prime Minister, he said, assured to look into the matter. Amarinder said he had spoken at the meeting about the farmers’ plight in Punjab while other leaders from Uttar Pradesh had highlighted the situation in their state. Responding to questions from mediapersons, Capt said the demonetisation had aggravated the problems of the farmers. In Punjab, where farmers were totally dependant on cooperative banks for their cash requirements, 7,000 of the 12,700 villages had no bank branches or ATMs, he pointed out, asking the Modi government how the farmers could be expected to survive in such a situation. Reacting to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s claim that the post-demonetisation situation in the country would stabilize in another 2-3 weeks, Capt said he did not see the situation improving even in the next one year. In a statement later, he said the gravity of the situation in Punjab could be gauged from the fact that 33 lakh farmers had signed the debt waiver forms under his party’s `Karza Kudki Khatam, Fasal Di Poori Rakam’ campaign, which had evoked massive response from the farming community, including farm labourers. Amarinder made it clear that even if the Modi government failed to extend any support, he was committed to waiving off the loans of the farmers in the state. Neither the farmers nor the arhtiyas would would have to pay a single penny out of their pockets to settle the outstanding loans, he promised. The plight of the farmers in Punjab, said Captain Amarinder, had been worsened by the Badal government’s anti-farmer policies and actions, including massive bungling in procurement, non-payment of dues to farmers, procurement at lower than MSP and delayed harvesting in border areas due to evacuation triggered by BJP-led war hysteria He said given the huge savings earned by the central government in oil subsidy, waiver of loans of the farmers should not be a problem. The BJP government at the Centre had waived off loans of industrialists to the tune of Rs. 110,000 crores, he pointed out, adding that the same could be done for the poor farmers, for whom it was a matter of life and death.

Congress releases 1st list of 61 candidates for Punjab assembly polls
The Congress on Thursday announced its first list of 61 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab, choosing to go with winnable candidates across various cross-sections, striking the right balance between youth, new faces and experience while giving adequate representation to women. The party, in its first list, has retained 31 sitting MLAs, while choosing to go with seven new faces, backed by strong credibility and winnability criteria. Five youth, six women, eight ex-MLAs and one ex-MP make up the rest of the first list. Captain Amarinder said all care had been taken to ensure winnability as the key criteria in the finalisation of the nominees. How can AAP run Punjab when it can’t manage its volunteers: Congress
Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the protests by its volunteers at a rally in Ludhiana on Wednesday, the Punjab Congress has asked how a party that cannot manage its handful of volunteers hope to run a large state like Punjab, especially given its shameful track record of governance in Delhi. Reacting to reports of volunteers protesting against what they termed as wrong seat allocation in Jagraon assembly constituency, allegedly in exchange of money, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) leaders on Thursday said it was bad enough for AAP that its rallies were a no-show. But now, with protesting volunteers and workers taking centrestage at all AAP rallies, the situation reflects a total loss of face for the party in Punjab, they said. In a statement,Congress leaders Pargat Singh, Inderbir Singh Bolaria and Sunil Dutti said the growing dissidence within AAP extends beyond what can be considered normal during ticket allocation for polls. The entire party is in a shambles, with volunteers and workers openly alleging scams and scandals against the party leadership, including national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, they pointed out, adding that AAP does not deserve to be considered as a serious contender at all for the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls. The number of AAP leaders and ticket aspirants who have revolted and quit the party accusing the leadership of selling poll tickets and even engaging in drugs and sex scandals can no longer be dismissed as amusing, said leaders, adding that with Punjab’s future at stake such serious charges of corruption and other scams and scandals need to be thoroughly probed by the Election Commission. The Punjab Congress leaders pointed to the number of AAP volunteers, including women’s hockey team captain Rajbir Kaur, who had raised the banner of revolt against the party leadership in recent days to express concern at the deep-rooted corruption malaise afflicting AAP. The EC should take serious note of these developments and initiate strict action against the AAP leadership, the Congress leaders demanded, warning that allowing the party to continue with its ways will not only further vitiate the state’s political atmosphere but will cause irrevocable damage to its future generations in the long run.
