Budget before polls clear violation of political norms: Capt Amarinder

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh has flayed the Modi government’s decision to announce the Union Budget before the Assembly elections in five states as blatant violation of all political and electoral norms.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Captain said the move was manifestly aimed at minimizing the negative impact of demonetisation on the poll prospects of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.
With his usual disregard for political propriety, the prime minister had chosen to advance the budget date from the traditional 28thFebruary of every year to 1st of February with an eye on the polls, Amarinder said.
Captain Amarinder said it was more than evident that Modi’s demonetisation move had backfired on his government, in particular the BJP. The decision to declare the budget ahead of the polls was prompted by the fact that BJP’s own workers were now coming out in protest against the demonetisation decision in the poll-bound states, including Punjab, where the ruling SAD-BJP combine had also reportedly complained to the Centre about its electorally detrimental effect, said Captain.
The expected budget announcement of some sops for the suffering masses, who were living in misery since being struck by the demonetisation monster, was quite clearly aimed at diverting the anger of the people, said Captain Amarinder. He, however, expressed the confidence that such gimmickry would not translate into votes for the ruling BJP and its allies.
