What is media hiding, and why?
Two students of a boarding school in Dehradun kill a little boy, a 12-year-old student, because they thought a mischief he committed was the reason their hostel outing was cancelled.
"It is not Doon school, as some are saying...It is a school in a very remote area...In fact, it is an unknown school," a police officer told the NDTV on March 29, with the anchor making no further effort to know the name of the school.
Some school boys watched the two students beating up the little kid with a cricket bat and a stump for hours, drenching him with cold water and making him drink dirty water. They later left the boy in a room and he was declared brought dead on arrival by hospital authorities.
School authorities hide the heinous crime, tell lies to parents, body is buried, everybody remains mum. And the newspapers decide to withhold the name of the school, shield the principal by refusing to name him. There's no explanation why fellow students who witnessed this incident did not report it at the time. That a boarding school is bringing up children who have no qualms about not reporting even such a blatant case of abuse and can live with it for days is something too sad.
Both alleged culprits are 19 years old, and belong to Dehradun.
The name of the school is Home Academy Senior Secondary School, Bhogpur, Dehradun. It has downed its website now. When the website worked, it carried on the homepage the vision statement that said the sole purpose of the Home Academy was "to serve the nation and mankind through education and impart moral values to the children." ------ It seemed least interested in finding the name of the school or even asking the names of those arrested for this heinous crime. ------ School manager is called Praveen Messi, the PTI teacher's name is Ashok Solomon, and the hostel warden was Ajay Kumar.
The school principal is Man Mohan Chandiwal. He also goes by the name of MM Chandiwal. He has point blank refused to take responsibility for the incident and said since it all happened in the hostel and not in school, so he is not responsible.
We should hail Usha Negi, the Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, who, after being tipped off by some locals, confronted the school management along with the dead boy's parents.
We are also surprised that sections of the media that rush to publish the names of a government school and names of teachers in case of something as minor as the teachers asking the students to clean the classrooms or sweep the school courtyard are hyper-sensitive when it comes to putting out the name of a school where the management can hide the killing of a small boy for days.
In fact, the NDTV went one step further. Its sole aim seemed to be to announce to the world that no reputed school of Dehradun was involved. It seemed least interested in finding the name of the school or even asking the names of those arrested for this heinous crime.
Punjab Today is choosing to not name the two allegedly guilty students, or the deceased boy. Congress promises Rs 72,000 per year to poorest families
Addressing the media after the Congress Working Committee meeting, party president Rahul Gandhi said they will provide Rs. 72,000 per annum to the poorest families, if voted to power.
The scheme would cover 5 crore families and benefit nearly 25 crore people, said Gandhi after the Congress Working Committee cleared the plan that party president described as the "final assault on poverty”.
This is about justice for the poor, said Gandhi at a press conference to announce the contours of the guarantee scheme that will make its way to the Congress manifesto ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The scheme is named as NYAY or Nyuntam Aay Yojana. Gandhi had been talking about minimum income gurantee for a while. "We are going to give you justice. Remember the number… The Congress guarantees that 20 per cent of India’s poor would make at least Rs 72,000 annually,” he said, describing it as a historic move.
The Congress chief insisted that the plan was "fiscally prudent” and implementable.
This does not mean everyone would get the Rs 12,000 dole. Gandhi explained that if a family makes Rs 6,000, the government would chip in the rest to raise the monthly family income to Rs 12,000.
"Minimum income threshold is Rs 12,000. Any family earning less than this, the government will pay the difference," Gandhi said.
Claiming the scheme is an extremely powerful, dynamic idea, Gandhi said in a way, it was the second phase of MNREGA.
"It is not acceptable to the Congress that there are poor people in the 21st century... The final assault on poverty is beginning," he added. Mahagatbandhan: Congress continues to suffer from inertia
IN THE ABSENCE of any discernible wave in favour of any political party or leader, as had happened in 2014, the ensuing general elections appear to be headed for a battle between alliance partners. Going by the recent developments, it is evident that while the NDA alliance is getting pro-active, the UPA is losing ground due to lack of initiative.
Congress, which is the largest component of UPA, does not appear to have learnt lessons from the past and continues to suffer from inertia. This despite Congress president Rahul Gandhi attempting to put up an aggressive stand on "chowkidar chor hai” theme. The party is failing to reach out to its allies while the BJP leadership has gone all out to secure alliances and be pragmatic even if some of these partners are demanding more than their share of seats.
Congress lost the initiative in the crucial Uttar Pradesh by not engaging with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party who were supposed to be part of the mahagatbandhan. The two parties went ahead to forge an alliance and left the Congress with only two uncontested seats. Congress reacted not by talking to the two parties but leaving out just seven seats for the two parties. It is clear that there is no possibility of a meeting ground now that the elections are getting closer. This may give advantage to the BJP which has been finding itself slipping in the state and elsewhere.
In the latest political initiative in Goa, Congress again displayed the same inertia and let the BJP forge alliances and again form the government. After the 2017 Assembly elections, Congress had emerged the single largest party but had failed to stake claim and let the BJP form the government with some help from the Governor.
After the unfortunate and untimely death of Manohar Parrikar, who was a popular leader, the Congress has again found itself beaten to the post by some quick action by the BJP. It reached out to two smaller parties, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party, which had fought elections opposed to the BJP, and engineered defection by two of the Congress MLAs to leave the Congress stranded.
Parmod Sawant taking oath as Goa CM It is not that the BJP has adopted fair methods to retain power in the state. It has agreed to two posts of deputy chief ministers to appease the new partners. For a 40-member Assembly, such a formation is certainly not deserving or desired. Also it must be the first time ever that there would be fewer number of ministers from the main party (BJP) than those of coalition partners. The new government has 11 ministers and seven berths have gone to coalition partners and independents.
BJP has again taken initiative in reaching to its critic Shiv Sena, even though it is part of the Sangh Parivar, to strike a deal for the Lok Sabha elections. The party’s chief political strategist Amit Shah has agreed to withdraw claim from certain seats to ensure that the partnership is not broken. Similarly the party has gone in for a tie up in Odisha and is making strenuous efforts to forge alliances in the South. Also it has succeeded in achieving in Assam what appeared to be impossible a month ago. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had withdrawn support to the BJP led government in Assam following the passage of Citizenship Act. AGP has been organising protests all over the state but the BJP was able to get the party back into its fold.
Congress, on the other hand, appears to be struggling to strike such alliances despite the initial advantage of almost all non-BJP parties deciding to join hands to form a mahagatbandhan. That prospect now appears to be getting dimmer. Even in West Bengal, where it is a rival of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, the prospects of an alliance are getting more difficult.
Congress must also realise that it cannot hope to make a mark or seek votes only on a negative campaign or trying to convince the public that "Chowkidar chor hai”. It must come out with what it has to offer. The sooner is does so, the better it would be for it.
