Acting on the recommendation of the Punjab government, Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore has appointed Jaspal S Sandhu as vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, while professor BS Ghuman has been appointed as VC of Punjabi University, Patiala.
The recommendations in this regard were made by the state government after a prolonged selection process adopted to select the new vice chancellors under which it is for the first time that applications had been invited. A total of 219 applications were received, out of which 31 were interviewed by the screening-cum-selection committee.
BS Ghuman is a noted educationist with 35 years of teaching experience. Presently, he is dean, faculty of arts and founder coordinator of Research Promotion Cell, Canadian Studies Centre, Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences, Panjab University. He has more than 100 research papers and publications.
He is M.A.Economics (Pbi University, Patiala) & M.Phil and Ph.D in Economics (GNDU, Amritsar).He has 37 years of teaching and research experience and has got 3 books published.· He has to his credit 72 research papers, guided 15 Ph.D. theses, 6 completed Research projects and 3 International projects.
He has been Member Senate, Panjab University, Chandigarh (2016-20 and 2008-12), Member Senate, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (2016-18) apart from being on various Academic Councils. Prof Ghuman has also been visiting professor to various International Universities
Ghuman has been professionally associated with various organizations like Association of British Scholars, Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Punjab & Chandigarh Regional Branch and Punjab Development Society.
Sandhu has 25 years of teaching and 18 years of administrative experience. He has also served as acting director NAAC. He is also a member of all important institutions in higher education committee in the capacity of secretary, UGC.
Before joining as Secretary, UGC, Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu held many academic and administrative positions in the University. He has established the first department of Sports Medicine in Indian university system in the year 2004 which was recognized by UGC under "Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area” programme.
Sandhu has also remained chairman, Steering Committee of the Supreme Court for monitoring inspection of Universities, apart from being member of another three dozen national and international bodies. He has represented India abroad as representative of ministry of higher education.
Talking to newspaper Hindustan Times, Dr Jaspal S Sandhu Said that "It will be privilege for me to serve the same university, where I studied, worked as teacher and administrator. I will use my experience as UGC secretary and international exposure, to enable the university to compete with world institutions”.
